5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of Brenham in mourning the loss of James "Leroy" Dreyer, |
---|
7 | 7 | | who died January 30, 2021, at the age of 90; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Leroy Dreyer was an exemplary citizen and a |
---|
9 | 9 | | dedicated educator whose work as a coach and athletic director at |
---|
10 | 10 | | Blinn College had a positive impact on the Brenham community and |
---|
11 | 11 | | on the lives of countless student athletes; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, He was born on February 9, 1930, in Brenham; he |
---|
13 | 13 | | was a standout athlete at Brenham High School and became the |
---|
14 | 14 | | first junior college All-American football player at Blinn |
---|
15 | 15 | | College, where he lettered in basketball and baseball; he went on |
---|
16 | 16 | | to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and a |
---|
17 | 17 | | master's degree from Sam Houston State University; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, While attending Blinn College, he met June |
---|
19 | 19 | | Whiddon, the love of his life, and they enjoyed 70 years of |
---|
20 | 20 | | marriage together; they were blessed with three children, Janet |
---|
21 | 21 | | Dreyer, Joan Dreyer Koonce, and the late James Leroy Dreyer Jr.; |
---|
22 | 22 | | his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of |
---|
23 | 23 | | much pride and joy for him; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, He joined the athletic faculty at Blinn College in |
---|
25 | 25 | | 1958 as an assistant football coach, and he became the head |
---|
26 | 26 | | baseball coach the following year; he was soon promoted to |
---|
27 | 27 | | athletic director, and under his leadership, one of the most |
---|
28 | 28 | | successful junior college athletic programs in the country was |
---|
29 | 29 | | created; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, He continued to serve for 27 years as the head |
---|
31 | 31 | | baseball coach and led his teams to five appearances in the |
---|
32 | 32 | | National Junior College Athletic Association World Series; he |
---|
33 | 33 | | was named the Texas Junior College Coach of the Year 12 times; in |
---|
34 | 34 | | recognition of his many contributions to Blinn Athletics, the |
---|
35 | 35 | | college named its baseball facility Leroy Dreyer Field in his |
---|
36 | 36 | | honor; in 2017, he was inducted into the American Baseball |
---|
37 | 37 | | Coaches Association Hall of Fame; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Leroy Dreyer was a devoted husband, father, and |
---|
39 | 39 | | grandfather, and he will long be remembered with respect and |
---|
40 | 40 | | admiration by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, |
---|
41 | 41 | | therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
44 | 44 | | family of James Leroy Dreyer; and, be it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
46 | 46 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
48 | 48 | | memory of Leroy Dreyer. |
