55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Brenham in mourning the loss of James "Leroy" Dreyer,
77 who died January 30, 2021, at the age of 90; and
88 WHEREAS, Leroy Dreyer was an exemplary citizen and a
99 dedicated educator whose work as a coach and athletic director at
1010 Blinn College had a positive impact on the Brenham community and
1111 on the lives of countless student athletes; and
1212 WHEREAS, He was born on February 9, 1930, in Brenham; he
1313 was a standout athlete at Brenham High School and became the
1414 first junior college All-American football player at Blinn
1515 College, where he lettered in basketball and baseball; he went on
1616 to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and a
1717 master's degree from Sam Houston State University; and
1818 WHEREAS, While attending Blinn College, he met June
1919 Whiddon, the love of his life, and they enjoyed 70 years of
2020 marriage together; they were blessed with three children, Janet
2121 Dreyer, Joan Dreyer Koonce, and the late James Leroy Dreyer Jr.;
2222 his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of
2323 much pride and joy for him; and
2424 WHEREAS, He joined the athletic faculty at Blinn College in
2525 1958 as an assistant football coach, and he became the head
2626 baseball coach the following year; he was soon promoted to
2727 athletic director, and under his leadership, one of the most
2828 successful junior college athletic programs in the country was
2929 created; and
3030 WHEREAS, He continued to serve for 27 years as the head
3131 baseball coach and led his teams to five appearances in the
3232 National Junior College Athletic Association World Series; he
3333 was named the Texas Junior College Coach of the Year 12 times; in
3434 recognition of his many contributions to Blinn Athletics, the
3535 college named its baseball facility Leroy Dreyer Field in his
3636 honor; in 2017, he was inducted into the American Baseball
3737 Coaches Association Hall of Fame; and
3838 WHEREAS, Leroy Dreyer was a devoted husband, father, and
3939 grandfather, and he will long be remembered with respect and
4040 admiration by all who were privileged to share in his life; now,
4141 therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
4343 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4444 family of James Leroy Dreyer; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4646 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4747 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4848 memory of Leroy Dreyer.
