3 | 3 | | disease that afflicts individuals across the nation and around |

4 | 4 | | the globe, and a considerable number of cases of colon cancer |
---|
5 | 5 | | arise from an inherited genetic condition; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Approximately 4.2 percent of the total U.S. |
---|
7 | 7 | | population will develop some form of colon cancer in their |
---|
8 | 8 | | lifetime; out of all colon cancer cases, about 5 to 10 percent are |
---|
9 | 9 | | hereditary, meaning that they are linked to genetic mutations |
---|
10 | 10 | | passed down by the individual's mother or father; overall, about |
---|
11 | 11 | | one in every 200 people is born with an inherited condition that |
---|
12 | 12 | | increases his or her chance of developing colon cancer; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Hereditary colon cancer conditions affect |
---|
14 | 14 | | individuals at younger ages, often before regular colorectal |
---|
15 | 15 | | cancer screenings begin at age 50; compounding the issue, medical |
---|
16 | 16 | | professionals are frequently undertrained in the diagnosis and |
---|
17 | 17 | | treatment of hereditary colon cancers, which can be an obstacle |
---|
18 | 18 | | to effective and timely intervention; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Early screening and treatment are crucial to |
---|
20 | 20 | | improving outcomes for patients with hereditary colon cancer; it |
---|
21 | 21 | | is important to identify families with inherited syndromes |
---|
22 | 22 | | linked to colorectal cancer or with a history of colorectal |
---|
23 | 23 | | cancer or its associated risk factors; the members of such |
---|
24 | 24 | | families may benefit from receiving regular screenings at a |
---|
25 | 25 | | younger age than the standard recommendation; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Increased public awareness is a powerful weapon |
---|
27 | 27 | | in the fight against colon cancer, and Texans can greatly benefit |
---|
28 | 28 | | from assessing their family history of the disease and learning |
---|
29 | 29 | | more about screening, genetic testing, counseling, and other |
---|
30 | 30 | | actions that they can take to protect their health; now, |
---|
31 | 31 | | therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby recognize the fourth week of March 2021 as |
---|
34 | 34 | | Hereditary Colon Cancer Syndrome Awareness Week and encourage |
---|
35 | 35 | | all citizens to learn more about this serious condition. |
