| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|---|
| 3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Comal County and Texans across the state in |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | celebrating the 175th anniversary of the founding of Comal |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | County; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, On March 24, 1846, the Texas Legislature created |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Comal County from the Eighth Precinct of Bexar County, and New |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Braunfels was named the county seat; located in south central |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Texas on the divide between the Blackland Prairies and the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Balcones Escarpment, Comal County was inhabited in the early days |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | of its settlement by numerous Native Americans, primarily the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Tonkawa and Waco tribes; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Permanent settlement of the area by non-native |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | peoples began in 1845, when Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | secured title to 1,265 acres of the Veramendi grant, including |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the Comal Springs and a section of the Comal River; he went on to |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | establish New Braunfels, named after Braunfels, Germany, and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | thousands of German immigrants and Americans attracted by the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | region's rich natural resources and potential for farming and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | ranching arrived to settle the area; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Comal County remains one of the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | fastest-growing counties in the state, and tourism, along with |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | retail and service employment, have joined agriculture as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | mainstays of the local economy; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, For 175 years, Comal County has been a robust |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | center for industry and culture in Texas, and its citizens |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | continue to embrace the county's rich history while looking |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | forward to a bright and prosperous future; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby recognize the citizens of Comal County for |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | their many invaluable contributions to the growth and prosperity |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | of our state and extend to all best wishes for a memorable 175th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | anniversary of the founding of Comal County; and, be it further |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | honor of this special occasion. |
