5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Teresa Altagracia Lozano Long, beloved |
---|
7 | 7 | | wife, friend, patron of the arts, champion of education, and |
---|
8 | 8 | | philanthropist, who died March 22, 2021, at the age of 92; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, "Altagracia" translates as "High Grace" or "Very |
---|
10 | 10 | | Gracious," a reflection of Teresa's remarkable kindness, |
---|
11 | 11 | | compassion, and commitment to improving the lives of low-income |
---|
12 | 12 | | Texans; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Teresa Lozano Long was born in Premont on July 20, |
---|
14 | 14 | | 1928, to Arturo V. and Elvira D. Lozano, and immediately began |
---|
15 | 15 | | blazing trails; she was Premont High School's first Mexican |
---|
16 | 16 | | American valedictorian at the age of 16 before enrolling at The |
---|
17 | 17 | | University of Texas at Austin, at which she was the only female |
---|
18 | 18 | | and the only Mexican American student majoring in physical |
---|
19 | 19 | | education; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, While teaching junior high in Alice, Texas, she |
---|
21 | 21 | | met Joe Long, at a time when intercultural relationships were not |
---|
22 | 22 | | only rare, but also controversial, and after marrying on February |
---|
23 | 23 | | 1, 1958, they were blessed with more than six happy and |
---|
24 | 24 | | harmonious decades together; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Teresa and Joe shone together as ardent advocates |
---|
26 | 26 | | of education and the arts who basked in the joy of providing |
---|
27 | 27 | | scholarships for students and who became significant |
---|
28 | 28 | | contributors in myriad fields including medicine, teaching, and |
---|
29 | 29 | | the fine and performing arts; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, She blossomed professionally as a Consultant for |
---|
31 | 31 | | the U.S. Office of Education on Migrant Education and Head Start |
---|
32 | 32 | | Program and in the Review Section of the Division of Compensatory |
---|
33 | 33 | | Education of the Texas Education Agency, where she also worked as |
---|
34 | 34 | | a Research Assistant, and as a Research Associate for the |
---|
35 | 35 | | Governor's Committee on Public School Education; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Her civic leadership was evident through the |
---|
37 | 37 | | countless boards and councils on which she served, including the |
---|
38 | 38 | | Chancellor's Council and Development Board at The University of |
---|
39 | 39 | | Texas, Texas Committee for National Museum of Women in the Arts, |
---|
40 | 40 | | National Council on the Arts, Austin College, First State Bank |
---|
41 | 41 | | and Community National Bank, Austin Lyric Opera, St. Austin |
---|
42 | 42 | | Catholic School, Seton Medical Center Auxiliary, Laguna Gloria |
---|
43 | 43 | | Museum, and Ballet Austin; and |
---|
44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, Her legacy of service forever will be |

45 | 45 | | memorialized in the Dr. Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin |
---|
46 | 46 | | American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, the Joe R. |
---|
47 | 47 | | and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at The University of |
---|
48 | 48 | | Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and the Joe R. and |
---|
49 | 49 | | Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin; and |
---|
50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, She received countless awards and honors for her |
---|
51 | 51 | | civic and philanthropic work, including being named a |
---|
52 | 52 | | Distinguished Alumna of The University of Texas at Austin, a |
---|
53 | 53 | | member of the Texas Women's Hall of Fame, and a recipient of the |
---|
54 | 54 | | National Humanities Medal; and |
---|
55 | 55 | | WHEREAS, She and her husband will impact generations of |
---|
56 | 56 | | Texans, past, present, and future, through the more than $150 |
---|
57 | 57 | | million they have contributed to nonprofits and higher |
---|
58 | 58 | | education, mostly for scholarships and programs; and |
---|
59 | 59 | | WHEREAS, She is survived not only by her beloved husband, |
---|
60 | 60 | | but also by her brother, Hector Lozano; her honorary |
---|
61 | 61 | | grandchildren, Gael, Alan, and Aranza, children of Ulises and |
---|
62 | 62 | | Betty Perez; her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends; |
---|
63 | 63 | | and she will be best remembered by those who know her as a devoted |
---|
64 | 64 | | wife, a beloved friend, and an avid believer in the |
---|
65 | 65 | | transformational power of education; now, therefore, be it |
---|
66 | 66 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
67 | 67 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
68 | 68 | | family of Teresa Lozano Long; and, be it further |
---|
69 | 69 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

70 | 70 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
