55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Teresa Altagracia Lozano Long, beloved
77 wife, friend, patron of the arts, champion of education, and
88 philanthropist, who died March 22, 2021, at the age of 92; and
99 WHEREAS, "Altagracia" translates as "High Grace" or "Very
1010 Gracious," a reflection of Teresa's remarkable kindness,
1111 compassion, and commitment to improving the lives of low-income
1212 Texans; and
1313 WHEREAS, Teresa Lozano Long was born in Premont on July 20,
1414 1928, to Arturo V. and Elvira D. Lozano, and immediately began
1515 blazing trails; she was Premont High School's first Mexican
1616 American valedictorian at the age of 16 before enrolling at The
1717 University of Texas at Austin, at which she was the only female
1818 and the only Mexican American student majoring in physical
1919 education; and
2020 WHEREAS, While teaching junior high in Alice, Texas, she
2121 met Joe Long, at a time when intercultural relationships were not
2222 only rare, but also controversial, and after marrying on February
2323 1, 1958, they were blessed with more than six happy and
2424 harmonious decades together; and
2525 WHEREAS, Teresa and Joe shone together as ardent advocates
2626 of education and the arts who basked in the joy of providing
2727 scholarships for students and who became significant
2828 contributors in myriad fields including medicine, teaching, and
2929 the fine and performing arts; and
3030 WHEREAS, She blossomed professionally as a Consultant for
3131 the U.S. Office of Education on Migrant Education and Head Start
3232 Program and in the Review Section of the Division of Compensatory
3333 Education of the Texas Education Agency, where she also worked as
3434 a Research Assistant, and as a Research Associate for the
3535 Governor's Committee on Public School Education; and
3636 WHEREAS, Her civic leadership was evident through the
3737 countless boards and councils on which she served, including the
3838 Chancellor's Council and Development Board at The University of
3939 Texas, Texas Committee for National Museum of Women in the Arts,
4040 National Council on the Arts, Austin College, First State Bank
4141 and Community National Bank, Austin Lyric Opera, St. Austin
4242 Catholic School, Seton Medical Center Auxiliary, Laguna Gloria
4343 Museum, and Ballet Austin; and
4444 WHEREAS, Her legacy of service forever will be
4545 memorialized in the Dr. Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin
4646 American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, the Joe R.
4747 and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at The University of
4848 Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and the Joe R. and
4949 Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin; and
5050 WHEREAS, She received countless awards and honors for her
5151 civic and philanthropic work, including being named a
5252 Distinguished Alumna of The University of Texas at Austin, a
5353 member of the Texas Women's Hall of Fame, and a recipient of the
5454 National Humanities Medal; and
5555 WHEREAS, She and her husband will impact generations of
5656 Texans, past, present, and future, through the more than $150
5757 million they have contributed to nonprofits and higher
5858 education, mostly for scholarships and programs; and
5959 WHEREAS, She is survived not only by her beloved husband,
6060 but also by her brother, Hector Lozano; her honorary
6161 grandchildren, Gael, Alan, and Aranza, children of Ulises and
6262 Betty Perez; her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends;
6363 and she will be best remembered by those who know her as a devoted
6464 wife, a beloved friend, and an avid believer in the
6565 transformational power of education; now, therefore, be it
6666 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
6767 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
6868 family of Teresa Lozano Long; and, be it further
6969 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
7070 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
7171 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
7272 memory of Teresa Lozano Long.
