2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Senate are pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the Houston East End Chamber of Commerce and |

4 | 4 | | congratulate the chamber for its many accomplishments; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Predating the founding of the city of Houston, the |
---|
6 | 6 | | East End can trace its origins to the 1820s, when New York |
---|
7 | 7 | | entrepreneur John Harris established Harrisburg at the |
---|
8 | 8 | | intersection of Braes and Buffalo Bayous; after briefly serving |
---|
9 | 9 | | as the capital of the Republic of Texas, the town was annexed by |
---|
10 | 10 | | Houston in 1926; today, the East End remains a location of great |
---|
11 | 11 | | importance as the proud home of the Port of Houston, one of the |
---|
12 | 12 | | nation's foremost ports for international trade and one of the |
---|
13 | 13 | | largest port facilities in the world; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The Houston East End Chamber of Commerce was |
---|
15 | 15 | | founded in 1991 to ensure the economic prosperity of the area; |
---|
16 | 16 | | guided by this central goal, the chamber hosts a wide range of |
---|
17 | 17 | | programs and events that encourage new commercial ventures and |
---|
18 | 18 | | support existing businesses, and it has begun providing webinars |
---|
19 | 19 | | and other resources to help business leaders meet the challenges |
---|
20 | 20 | | of the COVID-19 pandemic; moreover, the group created the |
---|
21 | 21 | | Strategic Vision for the East End in 2006, and the chamber and its |
---|
22 | 22 | | partners have since made outstanding progress, establishing an |
---|
23 | 23 | | Economic Development Division in 2009 and the East End Street |
---|
24 | 24 | | Fest in 2013; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated to equipping the next generation with |
---|
26 | 26 | | the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed, the chamber |
---|
27 | 27 | | foundation has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships over |
---|
28 | 28 | | the past 13 years; in addition, the chamber started an Education |
---|
29 | 29 | | Symposium and helped organize Port of Houston Maritime Academies |
---|
30 | 30 | | at Stephen F. Austin and Jack Yates High Schools as well as a |
---|
31 | 31 | | National Engineering Academy at Chavez High School; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the East End Chamber of |
---|
33 | 33 | | Commerce has played an integral role in the growth and economic |
---|
34 | 34 | | well-being of the region, and the success of this dynamic |
---|
35 | 35 | | organization is a testament to the superb work of its members, |
---|
36 | 36 | | both past and present; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby recognize the Houston East End Chamber of |
---|
39 | 39 | | Commerce for its exemplary efforts in behalf of the East End |
---|
40 | 40 | | community and the surrounding area and extend best wishes to all |
---|
41 | 41 | | those associated with the chamber. |
