11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 197
22 WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Senate are pleased to
33 recognize the Houston East End Chamber of Commerce and
44 congratulate the chamber for its many accomplishments; and
55 WHEREAS, Predating the founding of the city of Houston, the
66 East End can trace its origins to the 1820s, when New York
77 entrepreneur John Harris established Harrisburg at the
88 intersection of Braes and Buffalo Bayous; after briefly serving
99 as the capital of the Republic of Texas, the town was annexed by
1010 Houston in 1926; today, the East End remains a location of great
1111 importance as the proud home of the Port of Houston, one of the
1212 nation's foremost ports for international trade and one of the
1313 largest port facilities in the world; and
1414 WHEREAS, The Houston East End Chamber of Commerce was
1515 founded in 1991 to ensure the economic prosperity of the area;
1616 guided by this central goal, the chamber hosts a wide range of
1717 programs and events that encourage new commercial ventures and
1818 support existing businesses, and it has begun providing webinars
1919 and other resources to help business leaders meet the challenges
2020 of the COVID-19 pandemic; moreover, the group created the
2121 Strategic Vision for the East End in 2006, and the chamber and its
2222 partners have since made outstanding progress, establishing an
2323 Economic Development Division in 2009 and the East End Street
2424 Fest in 2013; and
2525 WHEREAS, Dedicated to equipping the next generation with
2626 the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed, the chamber
2727 foundation has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships over
2828 the past 13 years; in addition, the chamber started an Education
2929 Symposium and helped organize Port of Houston Maritime Academies
3030 at Stephen F. Austin and Jack Yates High Schools as well as a
3131 National Engineering Academy at Chavez High School; and
3232 WHEREAS, Since its inception, the East End Chamber of
3333 Commerce has played an integral role in the growth and economic
3434 well-being of the region, and the success of this dynamic
3535 organization is a testament to the superb work of its members,
3636 both past and present; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3838 Legislature, hereby recognize the Houston East End Chamber of
3939 Commerce for its exemplary efforts in behalf of the East End
4040 community and the surrounding area and extend best wishes to all
4141 those associated with the chamber.
