2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride |

3 | 3 | | in paying tribute to the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez on the |
---|
4 | 4 | | occasion of Cesar Chavez Day on March 31, 2021; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was born on March 31, 1927, near |
---|
6 | 6 | | Yuma, Arizona; he grew up in a hardworking family of farmers, and |
---|
7 | 7 | | he learned about injustice at an early age through the |
---|
8 | 8 | | discrimination he experienced throughout much of his childhood; |
---|
9 | 9 | | he left school after completing the eighth grade to become a |
---|
10 | 10 | | migrant farmworker; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, After serving in the United States Navy, he became |
---|
12 | 12 | | involved in the Community Service Organization and was soon |
---|
13 | 13 | | leading voter registration drives and helping to form new |
---|
14 | 14 | | chapters of the organization; he went on to serve as its national |
---|
15 | 15 | | director, and he was instrumental in making it the most effective |
---|
16 | 16 | | Latino civil rights group of its time; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In 1962, Cesar Chavez founded the National Farm |
---|
18 | 18 | | Workers Association, which would later become the United Farm |
---|
19 | 19 | | Workers of America; in 1965, the association joined in a strike |
---|
20 | 20 | | against California grape growers to protest low pay and poor |
---|
21 | 21 | | working conditions, and he led the organization in sustaining a |
---|
22 | 22 | | five-year strike and boycott that resulted in grape growers |
---|
23 | 23 | | signing contracts with the United Farm Workers; by 1973, grape |
---|
24 | 24 | | producers were working to undermine the agreements and the |
---|
25 | 25 | | organization's power, thus sparking the largest farm labor |
---|
26 | 26 | | strike in the country's history; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The boycott of grapes received the support of |
---|
28 | 28 | | millions of Americans, and California agricultural producers |
---|
29 | 29 | | were forced to support the state's historic 1975 collective |
---|
30 | 30 | | bargaining law that extended labor union protection to |
---|
31 | 31 | | farmworkers; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was inspired by the examples set by |
---|
33 | 33 | | Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and he embraced |
---|
34 | 34 | | the practices of nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience; |
---|
35 | 35 | | he achieved important victories for the rights of farmworkers and |
---|
36 | 36 | | and became one of the country's foremost civil rights leaders, |
---|
37 | 37 | | and his motto, "Si Se Puede," has continued to inspire |
---|
38 | 38 | | generations of activists; he was the recipient of the 1991 Aguila |
---|
39 | 39 | | Azteca Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Mexican |
---|
40 | 40 | | government to a person of Mexican heritage, and in 1994, he was |
---|
41 | 41 | | posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by |
---|
42 | 42 | | President Bill Clinton; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, A true hero whose courage and determination |
---|
44 | 44 | | served as an inspiration to millions of people throughout the |
---|
45 | 45 | | world, Cesar Chavez left an indelible imprint on our country and |
---|
46 | 46 | | on the lives of its citizens; it is truly fitting that a day be |
---|
47 | 47 | | set aside to commemorate his remarkable life and to honor his |
---|
48 | 48 | | historic achievements; now, therefore, be it |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
50 | 50 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 31, 2021, as Cesar Chavez Day |
---|
51 | 51 | | and encourage all Texans to celebrate his important legacy and |
---|
52 | 52 | | his invaluable contributions to our state and nation; now, |
---|
53 | 53 | | therefore, be it |
---|
54 | 54 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
---|
55 | 55 | | honor of Cesar Chavez Day. |
