11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 208
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride
33 in paying tribute to the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez on the
44 occasion of Cesar Chavez Day on March 31, 2021; and
55 WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was born on March 31, 1927, near
66 Yuma, Arizona; he grew up in a hardworking family of farmers, and
77 he learned about injustice at an early age through the
88 discrimination he experienced throughout much of his childhood;
99 he left school after completing the eighth grade to become a
1010 migrant farmworker; and
1111 WHEREAS, After serving in the United States Navy, he became
1212 involved in the Community Service Organization and was soon
1313 leading voter registration drives and helping to form new
1414 chapters of the organization; he went on to serve as its national
1515 director, and he was instrumental in making it the most effective
1616 Latino civil rights group of its time; and
1717 WHEREAS, In 1962, Cesar Chavez founded the National Farm
1818 Workers Association, which would later become the United Farm
1919 Workers of America; in 1965, the association joined in a strike
2020 against California grape growers to protest low pay and poor
2121 working conditions, and he led the organization in sustaining a
2222 five-year strike and boycott that resulted in grape growers
2323 signing contracts with the United Farm Workers; by 1973, grape
2424 producers were working to undermine the agreements and the
2525 organization's power, thus sparking the largest farm labor
2626 strike in the country's history; and
2727 WHEREAS, The boycott of grapes received the support of
2828 millions of Americans, and California agricultural producers
2929 were forced to support the state's historic 1975 collective
3030 bargaining law that extended labor union protection to
3131 farmworkers; and
3232 WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was inspired by the examples set by
3333 Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and he embraced
3434 the practices of nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience;
3535 he achieved important victories for the rights of farmworkers and
3636 and became one of the country's foremost civil rights leaders,
3737 and his motto, "Si Se Puede," has continued to inspire
3838 generations of activists; he was the recipient of the 1991 Aguila
3939 Azteca Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Mexican
4040 government to a person of Mexican heritage, and in 1994, he was
4141 posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by
4242 President Bill Clinton; and
4343 WHEREAS, A true hero whose courage and determination
4444 served as an inspiration to millions of people throughout the
4545 world, Cesar Chavez left an indelible imprint on our country and
4646 on the lives of its citizens; it is truly fitting that a day be
4747 set aside to commemorate his remarkable life and to honor his
4848 historic achievements; now, therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
5050 Legislature, hereby recognize March 31, 2021, as Cesar Chavez Day
5151 and encourage all Texans to celebrate his important legacy and
5252 his invaluable contributions to our state and nation; now,
5353 therefore, be it
5454 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
5555 honor of Cesar Chavez Day.
