55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Charley Frank Pride, a pioneering
77 country music legend, who died on December 12, 2020, at the age of
88 86; and
99 WHEREAS, A native of Sledge, Mississippi, Charley Pride
1010 was born on March 18, 1934, as the fourth of 11 children in a
1111 family of sharecroppers; he developed a love of baseball and
1212 music at a young age, and his mother bought him his first guitar
1313 when he was 14 years old; and
1414 WHEREAS, Charley left home for Memphis to seek out a career
1515 in professional baseball, and in 1952, he was signed by the
1616 Memphis Red Sox, and he went on to become an All-Star pitcher in
1717 the Negro American League; he was drafted into the United States
1818 Army in 1956, and he married Ebby Rozene Cohrad, his best friend
1919 and spiritual partner, while on leave that same year; after his
2020 military service, he played baseball on several minor league
2121 teams in Montana while also working as a smelter and performing
2222 at clubs in a four-piece band, the Night Hawks; his rise to
2323 musical stardom began in 1965, when he moved to Nashville and the
2424 influential country music producer Chet Atkins signed him to the
2525 RCA Victor record label; and
2626 WHEREAS, Charley released his first single through RCA
2727 Victor in 1966; he landed on the country music charts with his
2828 third single, "Just Between You and Me," and he became the first
2929 black performer to appear at the Grand Ole Opry since founding
3030 member DeFord Bailey appeared there more than 25 years earlier;
3131 in 1971, he released his biggest hit, "Kiss an Angel Good
3232 Morning," a song that reached the pop music charts and was among
3333 the Top-10 songs on the adult contemporary charts; he also earned
3434 Grammy Awards in 1971 for Best Sacred Performance and Best Gospel
3535 Performance and was named the Country Music Association's
3636 Entertainer of the Year, and the following year, he won a Grammy
3737 Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance; and
3838 WHEREAS, Over the next five decades, Charley amassed more
3939 than 50 Top-10 country hits, including 30 Number-1 hits; he
4040 routinely was sold out at American venues, and he developed a
4141 strong and loyal following in Ireland and the United Kingdom,
4242 which led to the sale of millions of albums worldwide; and
4343 WHEREAS, Charley and his beloved wife, Rozene, settled in
4444 Dallas during his music career, and he remained a treasured
4545 honorary Texan for the rest of his life; he was a devoted father
4646 to three children, Carlton Kraig, Charles Dion, and Angela
4747 Rozene, and his five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren
4848 enriched his life immeasurably; and
4949 WHEREAS, A lifelong baseball fan, Charley often sang the
5050 National Anthem at Texas Rangers games, and in 2021, the team
5151 dedicated a baseball field in his name and established the
5252 Charley Pride Internship for minority college students to train
5353 for careers in baseball; and
5454 WHEREAS, Charley was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in
5555 1993, and he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
5656 in 1999; in 2000, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of
5757 Fame; his trailblazing contributions to country music's rich
5858 heritage were recognized with the Willie Nelson Lifetime
5959 Achievement Award in 2020; and
6060 WHEREAS, Known for his smooth baritone voice and his
6161 friendly, graceful demeanor, Charley Pride remained kindhearted
6262 and humble, even after his remarkable talents brought him to the
6363 height of celebrity; his gentle presence inspired all who were
6464 blessed with his company, and his contributions to American music
6565 will continue to be appreciated for generations to come; now,
6666 therefore, be it
6767 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
6868 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
6969 family of Charley Frank Pride; and, be it further
7070 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
7171 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
7272 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
7373 memory of Charley Pride.
