6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Charley Frank Pride, a pioneering |

7 | 7 | | country music legend, who died on December 12, 2020, at the age of |

---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of Sledge, Mississippi, Charley Pride |
---|
10 | 10 | | was born on March 18, 1934, as the fourth of 11 children in a |
---|
11 | 11 | | family of sharecroppers; he developed a love of baseball and |
---|
12 | 12 | | music at a young age, and his mother bought him his first guitar |
---|
13 | 13 | | when he was 14 years old; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Charley left home for Memphis to seek out a career |
---|
15 | 15 | | in professional baseball, and in 1952, he was signed by the |
---|
16 | 16 | | Memphis Red Sox, and he went on to become an All-Star pitcher in |
---|
17 | 17 | | the Negro American League; he was drafted into the United States |
---|
18 | 18 | | Army in 1956, and he married Ebby Rozene Cohrad, his best friend |

19 | 19 | | and spiritual partner, while on leave that same year; after his |

20 | 20 | | military service, he played baseball on several minor league |

44 | 44 | | Dallas during his music career, and he remained a treasured |

45 | 45 | | honorary Texan for the rest of his life; he was a devoted father |

46 | 46 | | to three children, Carlton Kraig, Charles Dion, and Angela |

47 | 47 | | Rozene, and his five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren |

49 | 49 | | WHEREAS, A lifelong baseball fan, Charley often sang the |

50 | 50 | | National Anthem at Texas Rangers games, and in 2021, the team |

52 | 52 | | Charley Pride Internship for minority college students to train |
---|
53 | 53 | | for careers in baseball; and |

54 | 54 | | WHEREAS, Charley was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in |

55 | 55 | | 1993, and he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame |

56 | 56 | | in 1999; in 2000, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of |

57 | 57 | | Fame; his trailblazing contributions to country music's rich |

58 | 58 | | heritage were recognized with the Willie Nelson Lifetime |
