5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Roberto Ramiro Avitia Jr., who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | March 20, 2021, at the age of 67; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A beloved civic leader and an esteemed law |
---|
9 | 9 | | enforcement officer, Roberto Avitia enjoyed a fulfilling life of |
---|
10 | 10 | | service to his family, his community, and his church; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Roberto Avitia was born on October 23, 1953, in |
---|
12 | 12 | | Harlingen; he graduated cum laude from Pan American University |
---|
13 | 13 | | with a bachelor of science degree in law enforcement; he served |
---|
14 | 14 | | with distinction as a member of the Brownsville Police Department |
---|
15 | 15 | | for 36 years, and during his tenure, he earned numerous |
---|
16 | 16 | | commendations for his work in the Criminal Investigation |
---|
17 | 17 | | Division; he was appointed police commander in 2004 and was |
---|
18 | 18 | | appointed commander of the Professional Standard Command two |
---|
19 | 19 | | years later; he retired from public service in 2011; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Avitia shared 45 years of marriage with his |
---|
21 | 21 | | life's love, Elizabeth Limón Avitia; he was blessed with three |
---|
22 | 22 | | sons and with five grandchildren, who enriched his life |
---|
23 | 23 | | immeasurably; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, A man guided in all things by his Christian faith, |
---|
25 | 25 | | Mr. Avitia taught Sunday school at both Temple Emmanuel |
---|
26 | 26 | | Assemblies of God Church and the International Christian Center, |
---|
27 | 27 | | and he volunteered his time to numerous charitable |
---|
28 | 28 | | organizations; his many civic leadership roles included serving |
---|
29 | 29 | | on the board of directors of the Brownsville Men's Bowling |
---|
30 | 30 | | Association and the Boys Club and serving as president of the |
---|
31 | 31 | | Mr. and Mrs. Club, the Mr. Amigo Association, and the Gathering |
---|
32 | 32 | | of the Eagles; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Avitia was passionate about football and |
---|
34 | 34 | | especially enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys, and he was an |
---|
35 | 35 | | avid collector of sports memorabilia; he was always ready to help |
---|
36 | 36 | | a neighbor in need, and he took great joy in searching for |
---|
37 | 37 | | personalized gifts for his many loved ones; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Noted for his compassionate nature, his quick |
---|
39 | 39 | | wit, and his tireless devotion to his community, Roberto Avitia |
---|
40 | 40 | | was beloved by many, and he leaves behind memories that will long |
---|
41 | 41 | | be cherished by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, |
---|
42 | 42 | | therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
45 | 45 | | family of Roberto Ramiro Avitia Jr.; and, be it further |

46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

47 | 47 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |

48 | 48 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
