55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Roberto Ramiro Avitia Jr., who died
77 March 20, 2021, at the age of 67; and
88 WHEREAS, A beloved civic leader and an esteemed law
99 enforcement officer, Roberto Avitia enjoyed a fulfilling life of
1010 service to his family, his community, and his church; and
1111 WHEREAS, Roberto Avitia was born on October 23, 1953, in
1212 Harlingen; he graduated cum laude from Pan American University
1313 with a bachelor of science degree in law enforcement; he served
1414 with distinction as a member of the Brownsville Police Department
1515 for 36 years, and during his tenure, he earned numerous
1616 commendations for his work in the Criminal Investigation
1717 Division; he was appointed police commander in 2004 and was
1818 appointed commander of the Professional Standard Command two
1919 years later; he retired from public service in 2011; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mr. Avitia shared 45 years of marriage with his
2121 life's love, Elizabeth Limón Avitia; he was blessed with three
2222 sons and with five grandchildren, who enriched his life
2323 immeasurably; and
2424 WHEREAS, A man guided in all things by his Christian faith,
2525 Mr. Avitia taught Sunday school at both Temple Emmanuel
2626 Assemblies of God Church and the International Christian Center,
2727 and he volunteered his time to numerous charitable
2828 organizations; his many civic leadership roles included serving
2929 on the board of directors of the Brownsville Men's Bowling
3030 Association and the Boys Club and serving as president of the
3131 Mr. and Mrs. Club, the Mr. Amigo Association, and the Gathering
3232 of the Eagles; and
3333 WHEREAS, Mr. Avitia was passionate about football and
3434 especially enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys, and he was an
3535 avid collector of sports memorabilia; he was always ready to help
3636 a neighbor in need, and he took great joy in searching for
3737 personalized gifts for his many loved ones; and
3838 WHEREAS, Noted for his compassionate nature, his quick
3939 wit, and his tireless devotion to his community, Roberto Avitia
4040 was beloved by many, and he leaves behind memories that will long
4141 be cherished by all who were privileged to share in his life; now,
4242 therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
4444 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4545 family of Roberto Ramiro Avitia Jr.; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4747 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4848 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4949 memory of Roberto Avitia.
