2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Alzheimer's Association are |

3 | 3 | | hosting Alzheimer's Association State Advocacy Day at the Texas |
---|
4 | 4 | | Capitol on April 13, 2021; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, a progressive |
---|
6 | 6 | | neurodegenerative brain disorder, tragically robs individuals of |
---|
7 | 7 | | their memories and leads to debilitating mental and physical |
---|
8 | 8 | | impairments; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia, |
---|
10 | 10 | | a term that refers to the loss of memory and cognitive |
---|
11 | 11 | | functioning that is severe enough to interfere with daily life; |
---|
12 | 12 | | it is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and |
---|
13 | 13 | | the only cause of death in the top 10 that has no cure, no |
---|
14 | 14 | | treatment, and no way to slow its progression; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, More than 5.8 million people in the U.S. are |
---|
16 | 16 | | currently living with Alzheimer's, including 390,000 Texans; as |
---|
17 | 17 | | the disease advances, sufferers become completely dependent on |
---|
18 | 18 | | others for their care, and currently, more than 1.4 million |
---|
19 | 19 | | Texans are providing unpaid care to affected patients at home, |
---|
20 | 20 | | work that is valued at over $20.5 billion; according to the |
---|
21 | 21 | | National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer's disease also indirectly |
---|
22 | 22 | | costs businesses more than $37 billion each year in lost |
---|
23 | 23 | | productivity for employees who miss work or leave their jobs to |
---|
24 | 24 | | care for a relative; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, With early detection and diagnosis, individuals |
---|
26 | 26 | | with Alzheimer's and their families can gain access to treatment |
---|
27 | 27 | | medications, enroll in critical research trials, fully participate |
---|
28 | 28 | | in planning for the future, and receive help and support from |
---|
29 | 29 | | organizations such as the Alzheimer's Association; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease profoundly alters the lives |
---|
31 | 31 | | of not only the people who suffer from it, but also their |
---|
32 | 32 | | caregivers, their families, and their communities; on their |
---|
33 | 33 | | advocacy day, members of the Alzheimer's Association are |
---|
34 | 34 | | speaking out for the needs and rights of Texans with Alzheimer's |
---|
35 | 35 | | and their families, and it is indeed appropriate to honor them |
---|
36 | 36 | | for their dedicated work to advance research, raise awareness, |
---|
37 | 37 | | and improve services and support for those impacted by this |
---|
38 | 38 | | terrible disease; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 13, 2021, as Alzheimer's |
---|
41 | 41 | | Association State Advocacy Day at the State Capitol and commend |
---|
42 | 42 | | the members of the Alzheimer's Association for their outstanding |
---|
43 | 43 | | service to Alzheimer's patients and their families; and, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | further |

45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
