11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 237
22 WHEREAS, Members of the Alzheimer's Association are
33 hosting Alzheimer's Association State Advocacy Day at the Texas
44 Capitol on April 13, 2021; and
55 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, a progressive
66 neurodegenerative brain disorder, tragically robs individuals of
77 their memories and leads to debilitating mental and physical
88 impairments; and
99 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia,
1010 a term that refers to the loss of memory and cognitive
1111 functioning that is severe enough to interfere with daily life;
1212 it is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and
1313 the only cause of death in the top 10 that has no cure, no
1414 treatment, and no way to slow its progression; and
1515 WHEREAS, More than 5.8 million people in the U.S. are
1616 currently living with Alzheimer's, including 390,000 Texans; as
1717 the disease advances, sufferers become completely dependent on
1818 others for their care, and currently, more than 1.4 million
1919 Texans are providing unpaid care to affected patients at home,
2020 work that is valued at over $20.5 billion; according to the
2121 National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer's disease also indirectly
2222 costs businesses more than $37 billion each year in lost
2323 productivity for employees who miss work or leave their jobs to
2424 care for a relative; and
2525 WHEREAS, With early detection and diagnosis, individuals
2626 with Alzheimer's and their families can gain access to treatment
2727 medications, enroll in critical research trials, fully participate
2828 in planning for the future, and receive help and support from
2929 organizations such as the Alzheimer's Association; and
3030 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease profoundly alters the lives
3131 of not only the people who suffer from it, but also their
3232 caregivers, their families, and their communities; on their
3333 advocacy day, members of the Alzheimer's Association are
3434 speaking out for the needs and rights of Texans with Alzheimer's
3535 and their families, and it is indeed appropriate to honor them
3636 for their dedicated work to advance research, raise awareness,
3737 and improve services and support for those impacted by this
3838 terrible disease; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
4040 Legislature, hereby recognize April 13, 2021, as Alzheimer's
4141 Association State Advocacy Day at the State Capitol and commend
4242 the members of the Alzheimer's Association for their outstanding
4343 service to Alzheimer's patients and their families; and, be it
4444 further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4646 prepared for the Alzheimer's Association as an expression of high
4747 regard from the Texas Senate.
