5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Gladewater lost a beloved first |
---|
6 | 6 | | responder and civic leader with the passing of former fire chief |
---|
7 | 7 | | Wayne A. Smith on December 30, 2020, at the age of 65; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Fondly known as "Snuffy" to his friends and loved |
---|
9 | 9 | | ones, Wayne Smith was born in Gilmer on January 16, 1955, to |
---|
10 | 10 | | Herbert and Alice Smith, and he grew up with the companionship of |
---|
11 | 11 | | five siblings, Brenda, Beverly, Jerry, John, and Roger; after |
---|
12 | 12 | | graduating from Gladewater High School in 1973, he went on to |
---|
13 | 13 | | earn his associate degree in applied science from Kilgore |
---|
14 | 14 | | College; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Chief Smith led the Gladewater Fire Department |
---|
16 | 16 | | for more than 27 years, and his dedication and expertise were |
---|
17 | 17 | | respected throughout the city and beyond; an accomplished figure |
---|
18 | 18 | | in his profession, he was a Master Firefighter and an instructor |
---|
19 | 19 | | for the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service Fire Training |
---|
20 | 20 | | Academy and the Texas Municipal Fire School; furthermore, he was |
---|
21 | 21 | | president of the Local Emergency Planning Committee, safety |
---|
22 | 22 | | officer at the Northeast Texas Eastman Fire School, and president |
---|
23 | 23 | | of the Kilgore College Fire Academy Board; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his professional service, Chief |
---|
25 | 25 | | Smith was active in a number of other community groups and |
---|
26 | 26 | | initiatives; he was a prominent member of the Lions Club, where |
---|
27 | 27 | | he served as president in 2012, and he played an integral role in |
---|
28 | 28 | | establishing the Fall Festival Halloween activities; in |
---|
29 | 29 | | recognition of his contributions, he was named the 2010 Man of |
---|
30 | 30 | | the Year by the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Chief Smith enjoyed the love |
---|
32 | 32 | | and support of his wife, Cathy, with whom he shared a rewarding |
---|
33 | 33 | | marriage that spanned more than four decades; he took great pride |
---|
34 | 34 | | in his two sons, Randy and Brian, and with the passing years, he |
---|
35 | 35 | | had the pleasure of seeing his family grow to include a |
---|
36 | 36 | | daughter-in-law, Chantel, and four grandchildren, Audrey, |
---|
37 | 37 | | Christina, Kyler, and Chance; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Known for his leadership and integrity, as well as |
---|
39 | 39 | | his friendliness and delightful sense of humor, Wayne Smith |
---|
40 | 40 | | devoted himself to protecting his fellow citizens and improving |
---|
41 | 41 | | his community, and he leaves behind a record of service that his |
---|
42 | 42 | | loved ones can remember with pride; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Chief Wayne A. |
---|
45 | 45 | | Smith and extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his passing; |
---|
46 | 46 | | and, be it further |

47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
