11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 243
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the Baylor University men's basketball team, which won
44 the 2021 National Collegiate Athletic Association championship
55 title on April 5; and
66 WHEREAS, The Baylor Bears won the first men's basketball
77 national championship in the school's history by defeating the
88 previously unbeaten and top-ranked Gonzaga University Bulldogs
99 by a score of 86-70 in a game in which the Bears dominated the
1010 opposition from the opening tip; and
1111 WHEREAS, The Bears participated in the Final Four for the
1212 first time since 1950 and won five out of six games in the
1313 tournament by double digits; Jared Butler was named the
1414 tournament's Most Outstanding Player, and Davion Mitchell was
1515 the recipient of the National Association of Basketball Coaches
1616 Defensive Player of the Year award; and
1717 WHEREAS, Under the exceptional leadership of head coach
1818 Scott Drew, the Bears recorded 10 wins against teams ranked in
1919 the Associated Press Top-25 and finished the season with a record
2020 of 28-2; team members can take great pride in their fine
2121 performances over the course of a season that posed the unique
2222 challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic; and
2323 WHEREAS, Winning a national championship is a formidable
2424 task that requires countless hours of dedication and hard work
2525 and an unwavering commitment to excellence, and all associated
2626 with the Bears' basketball team deserve accolades for their
2727 historic achievement; now, therefore, be it
2828 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
2929 Legislature, hereby commend the Baylor University men's
3030 basketball team on its outstanding season and extend
3131 congratulations to the team's players, coaches, and staff on
3232 winning the 2021 National Collegiate Athletic Association
3333 championship title; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3535 the team as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
