1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 243
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize the Baylor University men's basketball team, which won
4	4	the 2021 National Collegiate Athletic Association championship
5	5	title on April 5; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The Baylor Bears won the first men's basketball
7	7	national championship in the school's history by defeating the
8	8	previously unbeaten and top-ranked Gonzaga University Bulldogs
9	9	by a score of 86-70 in a game in which the Bears dominated the
10	10	opposition from the opening tip; and
11	11	WHEREAS, The Bears participated in the Final Four for the
12	12	first time since 1950 and won five out of six games in the
13	13	tournament by double digits; Jared Butler was named the
14	14	tournament's Most Outstanding Player, and Davion Mitchell was
15	15	the recipient of the National Association of Basketball Coaches
16	16	Defensive Player of the Year award; and
17	17	WHEREAS, Under the exceptional leadership of head coach
18	18	Scott Drew, the Bears recorded 10 wins against teams ranked in
19	19	the Associated Press Top-25 and finished the season with a record
20	20	of 28-2; team members can take great pride in their fine
21	21	performances over the course of a season that posed the unique
22	22	challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Winning a national championship is a formidable
24	24	task that requires countless hours of dedication and hard work
25	25	and an unwavering commitment to excellence, and all associated
26	26	with the Bears' basketball team deserve accolades for their
27	27	historic achievement; now, therefore, be it
28	28	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
29	29	Legislature, hereby commend the Baylor University men's
30	30	basketball team on its outstanding season and extend
31	31	congratulations to the team's players, coaches, and staff on
32	32	winning the 2021 National Collegiate Athletic Association
33	33	championship title; and, be it further
34	34	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
35	35	the team as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
