| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Joan Mathis received the 2020 Lifetime Community |

| 3 | 3 | | Leadership Award from United Way of Lamar County; and |

| 4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, Retired from a long and rewarding career as a |

| 5 | 5 | | teacher at Paris Junior College, Ms. Mathis has contributed to |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | her community through her support of many worthwhile |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | organizations; she has served on the board of directors of the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Lamar County Chamber of Commerce, the Paris/Lamar County Habitat |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | for Humanity, and the Paris Education Foundation, and she has |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club; moreover, she is an |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | active member of the St. Paul Baptist Church and a two-time |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | president of Church Women United; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, A graduate of Paris Junior College, Ms. Mathis |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | taught developmental English, English composition, and American |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | literature at her alma mater from 1975 until her retirement in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | 2014, and she was named a 2010-2011 Minnie Stevens Piper |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Professor for her outstanding work in the classroom; over the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | course of her nearly four decades in education, she held numerous |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | leadership positions, such as president of the PJC Faculty |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Association and board member and Southwest region chair for the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Two-Year College English Association; in 2011, she was honored as |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | a distinguished PJC alumna, and an endowed scholarship was named |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | in honor of her and her parents, Berlin and Katherine Reese, who |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | helped to desegregate PJC in the 1950s; in addition to holding a |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | degree from PJC, Ms. Mathis earned a bachelor's degree in English |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | from Wiley College and a master's degree from East Texas State |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | University; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Joan Mathis has made a positive difference in her |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | community through a lifetime of purposeful endeavor, and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | residents of Lamar County are fortunate indeed to count her among |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | their fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate Joan Mathis on her receipt of |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | the 2020 Lifetime Community Leadership Award from United Way of |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Lamar County; and, be it further |

| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |

| 37 | 37 | | prepared for Ms. Mathis as an expression of high regard from the |
