1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 285
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	join the Autism Society of America in honoring the month of April
4	4	2021 as Autism Acceptance Month; and
5	5	WHEREAS, April has been known as Autism Awareness Month in
6	6	the United States and has been a time to focus on empowering
7	7	autistic individuals and their families; today, the autism
8	8	community seeks to shift the language surrounding autism in order
9	9	to move beyond "awareness" and to foster acceptance as a means of
10	10	more fully integrating individuals living with autism into our
11	11	social fabric; and
12	12	WHEREAS, The Autistic Self Advocacy Network began
13	13	celebrating the month of April as Autism Acceptance Month in
14	14	2011, and since then, numerous groups have followed the network's
15	15	example; a culture of true acceptance can lead to improved
16	16	comprehensive support services for those with autism and provide
17	17	them with more opportunities for education, employment,
18	18	accessible housing, and affordable health care; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Autism Acceptance Month is an opportunity to
20	20	celebrate individual differences while building an inclusive
21	21	society that enables people with autism to live full lives; it is
22	22	fitting that we honor the efforts of all who help promote an
23	23	understanding of autism as a natural condition in the human
24	24	experience; now, therefore, be it
25	25	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
26	26	Legislature, hereby recognize April of 2021 as Autism Acceptance
27	27	Month and encourage citizens and organizations throughout Texas
28	28	to participate in efforts to support and empower individuals with
29	29	autism and their families; and, be it further
30	30	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
31	31	honor of Autism Acceptance Month.
