| 3 | 3 | | recognize The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley chess team, |

| 4 | 4 | | which has won its third consecutive President's Cup; and |

| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The President's Cup is awarded to the winner of |

| 6 | 6 | | the Final Four of chess, which is the competition that determines |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the national championship among American colleges and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | universities; this year's event was the first to be held |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | virtually, and top-ranked chess teams from Webster University, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Saint Louis University, and Texas Tech University were in the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | competition; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley team |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | that competed in the Final Four tournament consists of the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | following grand masters: Mateusz Bartel, from Poland; Hovhannes |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Gabuzyan, from Armenia; Kamil Dragun, from Poland; and Vladimir |

| 16 | 16 | | Belous, from Russia; these young men can take great pride in |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | their outstanding performances; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Under the exemplary leadership of chess coach |

| 19 | 19 | | Bartek Macieja, the team has enjoyed great success and has |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | retained its number-one ranking from 2018 and 2019; previous |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | victories for the team this season include winning the Kasparov |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Chess Foundation University Cup and the FIDE World University |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Online Blitz Championship; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, The University of Texas Rio |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Grande Valley chess team has established itself as one of the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | finest in the nation; it is truly fitting that this exceptional |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | program receive special recognition for its third consecutive |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | national championship; now, therefore, be it |

| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |

| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby commend The University of Texas Rio Grande |
