55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Bobby Joe Morrow, an esteemed Texas
77 citizen and a world-champion athlete, who died May 30, 2020, at
88 the age of 84; and
99 WHEREAS, A native of Rangerville, Bobby Morrow was born on
1010 October 15, 1935, and he grew up on his family's cotton and carrot
1111 farm in the Rio Grande Valley; he was a naturally gifted runner,
1212 and he excelled on the football team and as a track and field
1313 athlete at San Benito High School, where he gained nationwide
1414 attention as a three-time state champion sprinter; and
1515 WHEREAS, Bobby was known for his natural physical poise on
1616 the track and for his fluid running style, and he honed his skills
1717 and talent at Abilene Christian University under the guidance of
1818 the late Coach Oliver Jackson; he won the Amateur Athletic Union
1919 championship for the 100-yard dash as a freshman in 1955, and he
2020 and his teammates broke or matched 10 world records; and
2121 WHEREAS, Bobby represented the United States at the 1956
2222 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, where he won gold medals in the
2323 100-meter and 200-meter sprints and in the 400-meter relay, and
2424 he was the first American sprinter since Jesse Owens in 1936 to
2525 earn a gold medal in all three events; he returned home a hero and
2626 received numerous accolades for his athletic achievements,
2727 including recognition as the 1956 Sportsman of the Year by Sports
2828 Illustrated magazine and as One of the Nine Greatest Living
2929 Americans by the United States Chamber of Commerce; and
3030 WHEREAS, After retiring as an athlete, Bobby returned to
3131 the Rio Grande Valley, and he enjoyed a quiet life in San Benito,
3232 where the school district's football stadium was named in his
3333 honor; he donated his Olympic gold medals with the hope of
3434 inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and he occasionally gave
3535 speeches and made public appearances; he preferred to live simply
3636 and dedicate himself to his loved ones and his community, and he
3737 remained humble and gracious throughout his life, despite his
3838 impressive accomplishments; and
3939 WHEREAS, Bobby shared 20 years of devotion with his
4040 longtime partner, Judy Parker; he was blessed with a son and two
4141 daughters and with two stepdaughters, and his 11 grandchildren
4242 and eight great-grandchildren were a source of much pride and joy
4343 for him; and
4444 WHEREAS, Bobby Morrow was a legendary figure in the world of
4545 sports and a cherished Texan; while famous for his extraordinary
4646 talent, he was also known for his loving and generous spirit, and he
4747 will long be remembered with respect and admiration by all who were
4848 privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
5050 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5151 family of Bobby Joe Morrow; and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5353 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5454 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5555 memory of Bobby Morrow.
