6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Bobby Joe Morrow, an esteemed Texas |

7 | 7 | | citizen and a world-champion athlete, who died May 30, 2020, at |

8 | 8 | | the age of 84; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of Rangerville, Bobby Morrow was born on |
---|
10 | 10 | | October 15, 1935, and he grew up on his family's cotton and carrot |
---|
11 | 11 | | farm in the Rio Grande Valley; he was a naturally gifted runner, |
---|
12 | 12 | | and he excelled on the football team and as a track and field |
---|
13 | 13 | | athlete at San Benito High School, where he gained nationwide |
---|
14 | 14 | | attention as a three-time state champion sprinter; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Bobby was known for his natural physical poise on |
---|
16 | 16 | | the track and for his fluid running style, and he honed his skills |
---|
17 | 17 | | and talent at Abilene Christian University under the guidance of |
---|
18 | 18 | | the late Coach Oliver Jackson; he won the Amateur Athletic Union |
---|
19 | 19 | | championship for the 100-yard dash as a freshman in 1955, and he |
---|
20 | 20 | | and his teammates broke or matched 10 world records; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Bobby represented the United States at the 1956 |
---|
22 | 22 | | Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, where he won gold medals in the |
---|
23 | 23 | | 100-meter and 200-meter sprints and in the 400-meter relay, and |
---|
24 | 24 | | he was the first American sprinter since Jesse Owens in 1936 to |
---|
25 | 25 | | earn a gold medal in all three events; he returned home a hero and |
---|
26 | 26 | | received numerous accolades for his athletic achievements, |
---|
27 | 27 | | including recognition as the 1956 Sportsman of the Year by Sports |
---|
28 | 28 | | Illustrated magazine and as One of the Nine Greatest Living |
---|
29 | 29 | | Americans by the United States Chamber of Commerce; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, After retiring as an athlete, Bobby returned to |
---|
31 | 31 | | the Rio Grande Valley, and he enjoyed a quiet life in San Benito, |
---|
32 | 32 | | where the school district's football stadium was named in his |
---|
33 | 33 | | honor; he donated his Olympic gold medals with the hope of |
---|
34 | 34 | | inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and he occasionally gave |
---|
35 | 35 | | speeches and made public appearances; he preferred to live simply |
---|
36 | 36 | | and dedicate himself to his loved ones and his community, and he |
---|
37 | 37 | | remained humble and gracious throughout his life, despite his |
---|
38 | 38 | | impressive accomplishments; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Bobby shared 20 years of devotion with his |
---|
40 | 40 | | longtime partner, Judy Parker; he was blessed with a son and two |
---|
41 | 41 | | daughters and with two stepdaughters, and his 11 grandchildren |
---|
42 | 42 | | and eight great-grandchildren were a source of much pride and joy |
---|
43 | 43 | | for him; and |
---|
44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, Bobby Morrow was a legendary figure in the world of |
---|
45 | 45 | | sports and a cherished Texan; while famous for his extraordinary |
---|
46 | 46 | | talent, he was also known for his loving and generous spirit, and he |
---|
47 | 47 | | will long be remembered with respect and admiration by all who were |
---|
48 | 48 | | privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
50 | 50 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
51 | 51 | | family of Bobby Joe Morrow; and, be it further |

52 | 52 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
