SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 314 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Henderson County in honor of the 175th anniversary of the county's establishment on April 27, 2021; and WHEREAS, Henderson County is located in the transitional region between East Texas and Central Texas and was originally formed from parts of Nacogdoches and Houston Counties; established by the Texas Legislature on April 27, 1846, the county was named in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first attorney general of the Republic of Texas and the first governor of the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, Henderson County's early Native American population consisted of Cherokees, Shawnees, Delawares, and Kickapoos, and the region was inhabited in prehistoric times by native tribes; following the Texas Revolution in 1836, people of European origin began to settle in the area, and Brownsboro, the county's oldest existing town, was established in 1849, with the town of Athens later chosen as the county seat; and WHEREAS, The county's first newspaper, the Athens Bulletin, began in 1873, and in 1880, railroads came to the county for the first time; as the county grew in population and industry, manufacturing played an important role in its development, and agriculture has remained a mainstay of the county's economy since its earliest days; and WHEREAS, Today, recreation and entertainment, including hunting and fishing, draw Texans to the county to visit sites along the Texas Forest Trail and the Texas Lakes Trail, and such local festivities as the Old Fiddlers Reunion and the Black-Eyed Pea Jamboree are popular annual events; the residents of Henderson County can take great pride in the county's rich history and in the outstanding contributions of its citizens to the growth and prosperity of the Lone Star State over the past 175 years; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th Legislature, hereby extend to the people of Henderson County best wishes for a memorable celebration of the county's 175th anniversary; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this special occasion.
