2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
---|
3 | 3 | | recognize Henderson County in honor of the 175th anniversary of |
---|
4 | 4 | | the county's establishment on April 27, 2021; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Henderson County is located in the transitional |
---|
6 | 6 | | region between East Texas and Central Texas and was originally |
---|
7 | 7 | | formed from parts of Nacogdoches and Houston Counties; |
---|
8 | 8 | | established by the Texas Legislature on April 27, 1846, the |
---|
9 | 9 | | county was named in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first |
---|
10 | 10 | | attorney general of the Republic of Texas and the first governor |
---|
11 | 11 | | of the State of Texas; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Henderson County's early Native American |
---|
13 | 13 | | population consisted of Cherokees, Shawnees, Delawares, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | Kickapoos, and the region was inhabited in prehistoric times by |
---|
15 | 15 | | native tribes; following the Texas Revolution in 1836, people of |
---|
16 | 16 | | European origin began to settle in the area, and Brownsboro, the |
---|
17 | 17 | | county's oldest existing town, was established in 1849, with the |
---|
18 | 18 | | town of Athens later chosen as the county seat; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The county's first newspaper, the Athens |
---|
20 | 20 | | Bulletin, began in 1873, and in 1880, railroads came to the |
---|
21 | 21 | | county for the first time; as the county grew in population and |
---|
22 | 22 | | industry, manufacturing played an important role in its |
---|
23 | 23 | | development, and agriculture has remained a mainstay of the |
---|
24 | 24 | | county's economy since its earliest days; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Today, recreation and entertainment, including |
---|
26 | 26 | | hunting and fishing, draw Texans to the county to visit sites |
---|
27 | 27 | | along the Texas Forest Trail and the Texas Lakes Trail, and such |
---|
28 | 28 | | local festivities as the Old Fiddlers Reunion and the Black-Eyed |
---|
29 | 29 | | Pea Jamboree are popular annual events; the residents of |
---|
30 | 30 | | Henderson County can take great pride in the county's rich |
---|
31 | 31 | | history and in the outstanding contributions of its citizens to |
---|
32 | 32 | | the growth and prosperity of the Lone Star State over the past 175 |
---|
33 | 33 | | years; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby extend to the people of Henderson County best |
---|
36 | 36 | | wishes for a memorable celebration of the county's 175th |
---|
37 | 37 | | anniversary; and, be it further |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
---|
39 | 39 | | honor of this special occasion. |
