1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 336
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	celebrate the preservation of the Official State Bison Herd of
4	4	Texas at Caprock Canyons State Park and to designate both
5	5	September 11, 2021, and September 10, 2022, as an Official State
6	6	Bison Herd of Texas Day; and
7	7	WHEREAS, American bison are a symbol of the historical
8	8	American West, and the majestic Southern Plains Bison have
9	9	endured as an icon of our state's heritage, spirit, and culture;
10	10	once on the brink of extinction, the Texas State Bison Herd
11	11	serves as a link to our past and as a symbol for an optimistic
12	12	future; and
13	13	WHEREAS, The Texas State Bison Herd remains a treasured
14	14	piece of our heritage due to the efforts of legendary rancher
15	15	Charles Goodnight, who began preserving the herd on his Panhandle
16	16	ranch in 1878 at the urging of his wife; against all odds, the
17	17	herd has managed to survive for more than 140 years, and today,
18	18	the majestic animals represent the last of the surviving Southern
19	19	Plains variety of bison; and
20	20	WHEREAS, The Texas State Bison Herd was donated to the
21	21	Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and moved to Caprock Canyons
22	22	State Park in 1997; since that time, the herd has grown from 32 to
23	23	more than 150 bison; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Over the last 24 years, the staff and volunteers
25	25	at Caprock Canyons State Park have worked diligently to conserve,
26	26	preserve, and restore the Texas State Bison Herd; as a result of
27	27	their efforts, Texans will be able to benefit from Charles
28	28	Goodnight's vision for generations to come; now, therefore, be it
29	29	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
30	30	Legislature, hereby commend all who have helped the Official
31	31	State Bison Herd of Texas to survive and remain a cherished piece
32	32	of the American West and Texas culture and encourage Texans
33	33	across the state to celebrate both September 11, 2021, and
34	34	September 10, 2022, as an Official State Bison Herd of Texas Day;
35	35	and, be it further
36	36	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
37	37	honor of the Official State Bison Herd of Texas.
