11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 336
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 celebrate the preservation of the Official State Bison Herd of
44 Texas at Caprock Canyons State Park and to designate both
55 September 11, 2021, and September 10, 2022, as an Official State
66 Bison Herd of Texas Day; and
77 WHEREAS, American bison are a symbol of the historical
88 American West, and the majestic Southern Plains Bison have
99 endured as an icon of our state's heritage, spirit, and culture;
1010 once on the brink of extinction, the Texas State Bison Herd
1111 serves as a link to our past and as a symbol for an optimistic
1212 future; and
1313 WHEREAS, The Texas State Bison Herd remains a treasured
1414 piece of our heritage due to the efforts of legendary rancher
1515 Charles Goodnight, who began preserving the herd on his Panhandle
1616 ranch in 1878 at the urging of his wife; against all odds, the
1717 herd has managed to survive for more than 140 years, and today,
1818 the majestic animals represent the last of the surviving Southern
1919 Plains variety of bison; and
2020 WHEREAS, The Texas State Bison Herd was donated to the
2121 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and moved to Caprock Canyons
2222 State Park in 1997; since that time, the herd has grown from 32 to
2323 more than 150 bison; and
2424 WHEREAS, Over the last 24 years, the staff and volunteers
2525 at Caprock Canyons State Park have worked diligently to conserve,
2626 preserve, and restore the Texas State Bison Herd; as a result of
2727 their efforts, Texans will be able to benefit from Charles
2828 Goodnight's vision for generations to come; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3030 Legislature, hereby commend all who have helped the Official
3131 State Bison Herd of Texas to survive and remain a cherished piece
3232 of the American West and Texas culture and encourage Texans
3333 across the state to celebrate both September 11, 2021, and
3434 September 10, 2022, as an Official State Bison Herd of Texas Day;
3535 and, be it further
3636 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
3737 honor of the Official State Bison Herd of Texas.
