11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 343
22 WHEREAS, Martin Grelle, a Clifton native and a
33 professional painter, has gained significant acclaim among
44 Western art enthusiasts and collectors through his portrayals of
55 life on the American frontier; and
66 WHEREAS, Mr. Grelle began drawing and painting at an early
77 age, and when he was in high school, the two artists who would
88 have a great influence on his career, James Boren and Melvin
99 Warren, moved into the area; he benefited from the mentorship of
1010 James Boren, and he held his first solo exhibition at a local
1111 gallery within a year of graduating from high school in 1973; 47
1212 years later, he has produced more than 30 solo exhibitions,
1313 including shows with the Texas Art Gallery in Dallas and with the
1414 Overland Gallery and Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona; and
1515 WHEREAS, Mr. Grelle's paintings feature cowboys, Native
1616 Americans, and cavalrymen in scenes set against the unspoiled
1717 beauty of the Old West; he fulfilled a long-held dream when he was
1818 invited to join the Cowboy Artists of America in 1995, and that
1919 year, he was called upon to participate in the first Prix de West
2020 Invitational at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in
2121 Oklahoma City; since then, he has twice won the Prix de West
2222 Purchase Award and numerous other Buyers' Choice Awards, along
2323 with many silver and gold awards in the categories of oil, water
2424 solubles, and drawings; and
2525 WHEREAS, For his lifetime achievements as an artist,
2626 Mr. Grelle was recognized with the Legacy Award by the Briscoe
2727 Western Art Museum in 2012 and with the Spirit of the West Award
2828 by the San Dimas Festival of Arts in 2016; his work has appeared
2929 at a host of invitational exhibitions across the country,
3030 including Masters of the American West at the Autry Museum in Los
3131 Angeles and the Quest for the West at the Eiteljorg Museum in
3232 Indianapolis, and he has been featured in such magazines as Art
3333 of the West, Western Art Collector, and Western Art &
3434 Architecture; and
3535 WHEREAS, Mr. Grelle has been president of the Cowboy
3636 Artists of America, and he has served as a board member and
3737 president of the Joe Beeler Foundation, a CAA initiative that
3838 provides scholarship opportunities for artists seeking to
3939 improve their skills; and
4040 WHEREAS, Through his stirring depictions of a bygone era,
4141 Martin Grelle has contributed to the rich artistic heritage of
4242 the Lone Star State, and his work is a source of joy to countless
4343 patrons and admirers of Western art; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
4545 Legislature, hereby honor Martin Grelle for his artistic
4646 achievements and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
4747 success; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4949 prepared for Mr. Grelle as an expression of high regard from the
5050 Texas Senate.
