4 | 4 | | Western art enthusiasts and collectors through his portrayals of |

5 | 5 | | life on the American frontier; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Grelle began drawing and painting at an early |
---|
7 | 7 | | age, and when he was in high school, the two artists who would |
---|
8 | 8 | | have a great influence on his career, James Boren and Melvin |
---|
9 | 9 | | Warren, moved into the area; he benefited from the mentorship of |
---|
10 | 10 | | James Boren, and he held his first solo exhibition at a local |
---|
11 | 11 | | gallery within a year of graduating from high school in 1973; 47 |
---|
12 | 12 | | years later, he has produced more than 30 solo exhibitions, |
---|
13 | 13 | | including shows with the Texas Art Gallery in Dallas and with the |
---|
14 | 14 | | Overland Gallery and Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Grelle's paintings feature cowboys, Native |
---|
16 | 16 | | Americans, and cavalrymen in scenes set against the unspoiled |
---|
17 | 17 | | beauty of the Old West; he fulfilled a long-held dream when he was |
---|
18 | 18 | | invited to join the Cowboy Artists of America in 1995, and that |
---|
19 | 19 | | year, he was called upon to participate in the first Prix de West |
---|
20 | 20 | | Invitational at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in |
---|
21 | 21 | | Oklahoma City; since then, he has twice won the Prix de West |
---|
22 | 22 | | Purchase Award and numerous other Buyers' Choice Awards, along |
---|
23 | 23 | | with many silver and gold awards in the categories of oil, water |
---|
24 | 24 | | solubles, and drawings; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, For his lifetime achievements as an artist, |
---|
26 | 26 | | Mr. Grelle was recognized with the Legacy Award by the Briscoe |
---|
27 | 27 | | Western Art Museum in 2012 and with the Spirit of the West Award |
---|
28 | 28 | | by the San Dimas Festival of Arts in 2016; his work has appeared |
---|
29 | 29 | | at a host of invitational exhibitions across the country, |
---|
30 | 30 | | including Masters of the American West at the Autry Museum in Los |
---|
31 | 31 | | Angeles and the Quest for the West at the Eiteljorg Museum in |
---|
32 | 32 | | Indianapolis, and he has been featured in such magazines as Art |
---|
33 | 33 | | of the West, Western Art Collector, and Western Art & |
---|
34 | 34 | | Architecture; and |

35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Grelle has been president of the Cowboy |

36 | 36 | | Artists of America, and he has served as a board member and |

37 | 37 | | president of the Joe Beeler Foundation, a CAA initiative that |

38 | 38 | | provides scholarship opportunities for artists seeking to |
---|
39 | 39 | | improve their skills; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Through his stirring depictions of a bygone era, |

41 | 41 | | Martin Grelle has contributed to the rich artistic heritage of |
---|
42 | 42 | | the Lone Star State, and his work is a source of joy to countless |
---|
43 | 43 | | patrons and admirers of Western art; now, therefore, be it |

44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature, hereby honor Martin Grelle for his artistic |
---|
46 | 46 | | achievements and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued |
---|
47 | 47 | | success; and, be it further |
