11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 357
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the City of Florence, which is the location of the
44 prehistoric Gault Site; and
55 WHEREAS, Florence is home to the Gault Archaeological
66 Site, which contains artifacts that have been scientifically
77 dated to an era from between 16,000 and 20,000 years ago; in
88 addition, the 23 archaeological cultures identified at the Gault
99 Site indicate a nearly continuous human occupation; and
1010 WHEREAS, The area features ideal conditions for human
1111 habitation, including abundant water sources, an ecotone capable
1212 of supporting plentiful food resources, and large amounts of
1313 Edwards chert for toolmaking and trade; and
1414 WHEREAS, The Gault Site is one of the oldest archaeological
1515 sites in North America and one of the few that has been associated
1616 with a community; and
1717 WHEREAS, The people of Florence are justifiably proud of
1818 the historic nature of the Gault Archaeological Site, and it is
1919 truly fitting that they receive special recognition for their
2020 stewardship of this significant setting; now, therefore, be it
2121 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
2222 Legislature, hereby recognize the City of Florence as the
2323 location of an archaeological treasure dating back to 20,000
2424 years ago; and, be it further
2525 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2626 the city as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
