5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Andrew Sharp Peacock, an esteemed |
---|
7 | 7 | | Australian statesman and Austin resident, who died April 16, |
---|
8 | 8 | | 2021, at the age of 82; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Andrew Peacock was born in Melbourne, Australia, |
---|
10 | 10 | | on February 13, 1939; he attended Scotch College before earning |
---|
11 | 11 | | his law degree from the prestigious University of Melbourne; he |
---|
12 | 12 | | was a devoted father to his three daughters, Caroline Cordeaux, |
---|
13 | 13 | | Ann Peacock, and Jane Chapple-Hyam, and a devoted grandfather to |
---|
14 | 14 | | Andrew Kroger, Woody Kroger, and Christopher Cordeaux; he |
---|
15 | 15 | | married his beloved wife, Penne Korth Peacock, in 2002; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Peacock was elected to the Australian |
---|
17 | 17 | | Parliament at the age of 27, and three years later, in 1969, he |
---|
18 | 18 | | was appointed minister for the army; he went on to develop a |
---|
19 | 19 | | career of excellence in multiple cabinet positions, and he served |
---|
20 | 20 | | as leader of the Liberal Party from 1983 to 1985 and from 1989 to |
---|
21 | 21 | | 1990; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Deeply knowledgeable about world affairs, he was |
---|
23 | 23 | | a revered statesman who was known for his razor-sharp wit, and |
---|
24 | 24 | | during his 30 years in politics, many international leaders |
---|
25 | 25 | | sought his wise counsel; in 1997, he was appointed to serve as |
---|
26 | 26 | | Australia's ambassador to the United States, and he handled his |
---|
27 | 27 | | many responsibilities skillfully until the end of his service in |
---|
28 | 28 | | 1999; he also served as president of Boeing Australia, and he and |
---|
29 | 29 | | his wife moved to Austin after his retirement; he then became a |
---|
30 | 30 | | highly regarded board member of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of |
---|
31 | 31 | | Public Affairs, and he continued to regularly visit Australia, |
---|
32 | 32 | | where he maintained his citizenship; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Andrew Peacock embraced life with joy and vigor, |
---|
34 | 34 | | and he had an extraordinary career as a politician and diplomat |
---|
35 | 35 | | that was driven and defined by his sincere love of his country; he |
---|
36 | 36 | | was a widely respected international figure and was beloved by |
---|
37 | 37 | | many, and he leaves behind memories that will long be treasured by |
---|
38 | 38 | | all who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
41 | 41 | | family of Andrew Sharp Peacock; and, be it further |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
43 | 43 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
45 | 45 | | memory of Andrew Peacock. |
