1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 404
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize Western Governors University Texas on the occasion of
4	4	the institution's 10th anniversary; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Western Governors University Texas is a
6	6	nonprofit, fully online university that was established by
7	7	Governor Rick Perry in 2011 to provide greater opportunity for
8	8	Texans to obtain affordable, quality education and to earn
9	9	college degrees; a state affiliate of the national Western
10	10	Governors University, WGU Texas operates in partnership with the
11	11	State of Texas, including the Texas Higher Education
12	12	Coordinating Board, the Texas Education Agency, and the Texas
13	13	Workforce Commission; and
14	14	WHEREAS, The university offers more than 60 accredited
15	15	undergraduate and graduate degree programs to prepare students
16	16	for careers in the high-demand fields of information technology,
17	17	business, education, and health care; the school offers
18	18	personalized and individualized instruction and takes an
19	19	innovative approach to higher education through the use of
20	20	technology and through its competency-based learning model that
21	21	allows students to accelerate the process of completing their
22	22	degrees; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Western Governors University Texas is the
24	24	second-largest producer of nurses in the state and has received a
25	25	Military Friendly School Designation each year since its
26	26	establishment; more than 18,000 WGU Texas alumni live and work in
27	27	Texas, and the university currently enrolls 14,000 students who
28	28	reside throughout the state and in most of its 254 counties; many
29	29	students are adult learners, and 70 percent of students are
30	30	members of underserved populations; and
31	31	WHEREAS, Western Governors University has greatly benefited
32	32	the Lone Star State by providing expanded opportunities for Texas
33	33	citizens to receive quality education; university staff and
34	34	administrators are indeed deserving of recognition for their
35	35	contributions to the success of this outstanding institution of
36	36	higher education; now, therefore, be it
37	37	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
38	38	Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to Western Governors
39	39	University Texas for 10 years of exemplary service to Texans and
40	40	extend to all associated with the university best wishes for the
41	41	future; and, be it further
42	42	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
43	43	the university as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
