6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The state's highest accolade for excellence in the |

7 | 7 | | arts, designation as a Texas State Artist is conferred on those |

8 | 8 | | individuals who represent the best of our rich and diverse |
---|
9 | 9 | | artistic community and who inspire others through their unique |
---|
10 | 10 | | creative expression; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Cyrus Cassells, the 2021 State Poet Laureate, is |
---|
12 | 12 | | the author of eight volumes of poetry, including The Gospel |
---|
13 | 13 | | According to Wild Indigo, which was a finalist for the NAACP |
---|
14 | 14 | | Image Award and the Balcones Prize, as well as More Than Watchmen |

15 | 15 | | at Daybreak and the forthcoming The World That the Shooter Left |

16 | 16 | | Us; his translation of Still Life with Children: Selected Poems |

17 | 17 | | of Francesc Parcerisas won the Soeurette Diehl Fraser Award from |

18 | 18 | | the Texas Institute of Letters, and his other honors include a |

19 | 19 | | Lambda Literary Award, a Lannan Literary Award, two grants from |

30 | 30 | | Lecrae, and Gary Clark Jr., and he has performed at the White |

31 | 31 | | House, the Library of Congress, and other venues around the |

32 | 32 | | world; a four-time Grammy nominee, he won for Best Traditional |

33 | 33 | | R&B Performance for his song "Bet Ain't Worth the Hand"; and |

34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The unique work of Annette Lawrence, the 2021 |

35 | 35 | | State Two-Dimensional Artist, turns the ordinary data of |

36 | 36 | | everyday life into drawings, objects, and installations, and her |

37 | 37 | | pieces are included in the collections of the Museum of Fine |
---|
38 | 38 | | Arts, Houston, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Rachofsky |
---|
39 | 39 | | Collection, Artpace San Antonio, and the Blanton Museum of Art in |

40 | 40 | | Austin, among others; her work appeared in the 1997 Biennial at |

41 | 41 | | the Whitney Museum of American Art, and she is the recipient of a |

42 | 42 | | MacDowell Fellowship, the Moss/Chumley Award from the Meadows |

48 | 48 | | WHEREAS, Jennifer Ling Datchuk, the 2021 State |

49 | 49 | | Three-Dimensional Artist, was born in Ohio and raised in |

50 | 50 | | Brooklyn; trained in ceramics, she utilizes materials often |
---|
51 | 51 | | associated with traditional women's work, such as porcelain, |
---|
52 | 52 | | hair, and textiles; she earned her bachelor of fine arts degree |
---|
53 | 53 | | at Kent State University and her master of fine arts degree from |
---|
54 | 54 | | the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and she has |
---|
55 | 55 | | participated in residencies in Germany, China, the Netherlands, |
---|
56 | 56 | | and San Antonio; she received the 2017 Emerging Voices Award from |
---|
57 | 57 | | the American Craft Council and was named a United States Artists |
---|
58 | 58 | | Fellow in Craft in 2020; she is an assistant professor of art at |
---|
59 | 59 | | Texas State University and maintains a studio in San Antonio; and |
---|
60 | 60 | | WHEREAS, The artists who have been selected to hold these |
---|
61 | 61 | | prestigious posts have all greatly contributed to the vibrant |
---|
62 | 62 | | cultural life of the Lone Star State, and Texas is indeed |
---|
63 | 63 | | fortunate to be home to these talented individuals; now, |
---|
64 | 64 | | therefore, be it |

65 | 65 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |

66 | 66 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate the 2021 Texas Commission on |

67 | 67 | | the Arts honorees and extend to them sincere best wishes for |
