11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 412
22 WHEREAS, The Texas Commission on the Arts has announced the
33 2021 appointments for the positions of State Poet Laureate, State
44 Musician, State Two-Dimensional Artist, and State
55 Three-Dimensional Artist; and
66 WHEREAS, The state's highest accolade for excellence in the
77 arts, designation as a Texas State Artist is conferred on those
88 individuals who represent the best of our rich and diverse
99 artistic community and who inspire others through their unique
1010 creative expression; and
1111 WHEREAS, Cyrus Cassells, the 2021 State Poet Laureate, is
1212 the author of eight volumes of poetry, including The Gospel
1313 According to Wild Indigo, which was a finalist for the NAACP
1414 Image Award and the Balcones Prize, as well as More Than Watchmen
1515 at Daybreak and the forthcoming The World That the Shooter Left
1616 Us; his translation of Still Life with Children: Selected Poems
1717 of Francesc Parcerisas won the Soeurette Diehl Fraser Award from
1818 the Texas Institute of Letters, and his other honors include a
1919 Lambda Literary Award, a Lannan Literary Award, two grants from
2020 the National Endowment for the Arts, a Pushcart Prize, and a
2121 William Carlos Williams Award; moreover, he was named a National
2222 Poetry Series winner; he is a professor of English at Texas State
2323 University; and
2424 WHEREAS, The 2021 State Musician is Leon Bridges, whose
2525 first album, Coming Home, debuted at number six on the Billboard
2626 charts in 2015 and went on to be certified as a gold record; his
2727 critically acclaimed second album, Good Thing, was released in
2828 May 2018; he has written and performed songs with such artists as
2929 Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Nick Waterhouse, Kacey Musgraves,
3030 Lecrae, and Gary Clark Jr., and he has performed at the White
3131 House, the Library of Congress, and other venues around the
3232 world; a four-time Grammy nominee, he won for Best Traditional
3333 R&B Performance for his song "Bet Ain't Worth the Hand"; and
3434 WHEREAS, The unique work of Annette Lawrence, the 2021
3535 State Two-Dimensional Artist, turns the ordinary data of
3636 everyday life into drawings, objects, and installations, and her
3737 pieces are included in the collections of the Museum of Fine
3838 Arts, Houston, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Rachofsky
3939 Collection, Artpace San Antonio, and the Blanton Museum of Art in
4040 Austin, among others; her work appeared in the 1997 Biennial at
4141 the Whitney Museum of American Art, and she is the recipient of a
4242 MacDowell Fellowship, the Moss/Chumley Award from the Meadows
4343 Museum, and the Otis and Velma Davis Dozier Travel Grant from the
4444 Dallas Museum of Art; she recently retired as a professor of
4545 studio art at the University of North Texas, and in August 2021,
4646 she will begin a visiting faculty position at Bennington College
4747 in Vermont; and
4848 WHEREAS, Jennifer Ling Datchuk, the 2021 State
4949 Three-Dimensional Artist, was born in Ohio and raised in
5050 Brooklyn; trained in ceramics, she utilizes materials often
5151 associated with traditional women's work, such as porcelain,
5252 hair, and textiles; she earned her bachelor of fine arts degree
5353 at Kent State University and her master of fine arts degree from
5454 the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and she has
5555 participated in residencies in Germany, China, the Netherlands,
5656 and San Antonio; she received the 2017 Emerging Voices Award from
5757 the American Craft Council and was named a United States Artists
5858 Fellow in Craft in 2020; she is an assistant professor of art at
5959 Texas State University and maintains a studio in San Antonio; and
6060 WHEREAS, The artists who have been selected to hold these
6161 prestigious posts have all greatly contributed to the vibrant
6262 cultural life of the Lone Star State, and Texas is indeed
6363 fortunate to be home to these talented individuals; now,
6464 therefore, be it
6565 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
6666 Legislature, hereby congratulate the 2021 Texas Commission on
6767 the Arts honorees and extend to them sincere best wishes for
6868 continued fulfillment in their creative endeavors.
