5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The state's highest accolade for excellence in the |

6 | 6 | | arts, designation as a Texas State Artist is conferred on those |

7 | 7 | | individuals who represent the best of our rich and diverse |
---|
8 | 8 | | artistic community and who inspire others through their unique |
---|
9 | 9 | | creative expression; and |

10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The 2022 State Poet Laureate is writer and |

11 | 11 | | educator Lupe Mendez; his 2019 book, Why I Am Like Tequila, won |
---|
12 | 12 | | the John A. Robertson Award from the Texas Institute of Letters, |

13 | 13 | | and his work can also be seen in a variety of publications, |

14 | 14 | | including Aster(ix), the Kenyon Review, Gulf Coast, and the |

15 | 15 | | Academy of American Poets Poem-a-Day series; holding a master's |

16 | 16 | | degree in creative writing from The University of Texas at El |
---|
17 | 17 | | Paso, he has been awarded fellowships by CantoMundo, the Macondo |

18 | 18 | | Foundation, and the Crescendo Literary/Poetry Foundation |

39 | 39 | | has been included in the Whitney Biennial and, more recently, in |

42 | 42 | | National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, a CAA Committee on |

48 | 48 | | of materials, including paper, metal, wood, and wire; his solo |

49 | 49 | | exhibition, "Jesse Lott: Urban Frontier Artist," was presented |

50 | 50 | | by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Washington, D.C., and the |

51 | 51 | | Houston Art Car Museum, and his pieces have also been shown at the |

52 | 52 | | Studio Museum and Alternative Museum in New York; he has held an |

53 | 53 | | all-ages workshop in his studio for many years, and he helped |

54 | 54 | | motivate the creation of the Project Row Houses in Houston; he |

55 | 55 | | was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award in the Visual |

57 | 57 | | WHEREAS, The artists who have been selected to hold these |

58 | 58 | | prestigious posts have all greatly contributed to the vibrant |

59 | 59 | | cultural life of the Lone Star State, and Texas is indeed |

60 | 60 | | fortunate to be home to these talented individuals; now, |

62 | 62 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |

63 | 63 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate the 2022 Texas Commission on |
