55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Dr. James T. Willerson, who died
77 September 16, 2020; and
88 WHEREAS, James Willerson was an exemplary citizen and a
99 highly esteemed physician whose research in the field of
1010 cardiovascular medicine had a positive impact on the lives of
1111 countless people; and
1212 WHEREAS, Born on November 16, 1939, Dr. Willerson
1313 graduated Phi Beta Kappa from The University of Texas at Austin,
1414 where he was a four-year letterman in swimming and was a member of
1515 the Texas Cowboys and the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity; he earned
1616 his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and he
1717 received his postgraduate training at Harvard Medical School and
1818 the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston; and
1919 WHEREAS, He was widely known for his exceptional skill in
2020 diagnosing and treating patients, and he cared for more than
2121 3,000 patients in his medical practice; during the COVID-19
2222 pandemic, he continued to see patients daily, up until shortly
2323 before the time of his passing; he was noted for his warm and
2424 personable manner, and he was trusted and admired for the
2525 attentive care and sense of priority with which he treated each
2626 of his patients; and
2727 WHEREAS, He concentrated his medical research on the
2828 detection and treatment of unstable atherosclerotic plaques and
2929 on the discovery of the genes and abnormal proteins responsible
3030 for cardiovascular disease; he was awarded 15 patents as a result
3131 of his research, and he cofounded four biotechnology start-up
3232 companies that translated his research team's discoveries into
3333 clinical practice; and
3434 WHEREAS, Dr. Willerson was one of the longest-serving
3535 editors-in-chief of Circulation, a prestigious journal of the
3636 American Heart Association; in addition, he edited or coedited 27
3737 textbooks and published more than 1,030 articles in major
3838 scientific journals, and he served as a visiting professor and
3939 lecturer at more than 260 institutions worldwide; and
4040 WHEREAS, He and his former wife of 43 years, Nancy Beamer
4141 Willerson, were blessed with two daughters, Sara Willerson and
4242 Dr. Amy Willerson; his grandchildren, James, Grace, and Thomas
4343 Suerth, were a source of much pride and joy for him; and
4444 WHEREAS, A world-renowned researcher and medical expert
4545 and a talented and devoted physician, Dr. James Willerson
4646 dedicated himself to the pursuit of discovery and advancement in
4747 the field of cardiovascular medicine; he was honored with
4848 numerous accolades from around the globe that are bestowed for
4949 the highest achievements in medical practice, research, and
5050 leadership, and his invaluable contributions to his field will
5151 continue to benefit future generations for years to come; now,
5252 therefore, be it
5353 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
5454 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5555 family of Dr. James T. Willerson; and, be it further
5656 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5757 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5858 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5959 memory of James Willerson.
