55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Joe A. Rodriguez, a beloved resident of
77 Brownsville, who died at the age of 85; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Edinburg, Joe "Coach" Rodriguez was
99 born on March 19, 1936; he developed a love of sports at a young
1010 age, and he excelled in baseball as a first baseman at Edinburg
1111 High School; and
1212 WHEREAS, Joe continued to play baseball for Pan American
1313 College and the Joe Davis Ginners, a semiprofessional league; he
1414 graduated at the age of 20 and soon married his college
1515 sweetheart, Emma Leal; they moved to Brownsville, where he
1616 remained the rest of his life; he and Emma, who preceded him in
1717 death, raised four children and were blessed with seven
1818 grandchildren; and
1919 WHEREAS, Coach Joe began a long and fulfilling career in
2020 public education by serving as a physical education coach at
2121 Cummings Junior High School; he later coached at Brownsville High
2222 School, where he led baseball teams to appearances at state
2323 semifinals and finals; after becoming a head football coach, he
2424 was named South Texas Coach of the Year for baseball, basketball,
2525 and football; he went on to serve for 27 years as the athletic
2626 director for the Brownsville Independent School District, and
2727 under his leadership, the district earned seven South Texas
2828 Athletic Program of the Year awards; and
2929 WHEREAS, An esteemed leader in public education, Coach
3030 Rodriguez served as a Brownsville Independent School District
3131 trustee for 15 years; he was a vice president of the National
3232 Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members, and he was honored for
3333 his leadership as a Hispanic educator by United States Presidents
3434 Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush and by Mexican President
3535 Gustavo Diaz Ordaz; and
3636 WHEREAS, Coach Joe was admired by his loved ones for his
3737 incomparable fearlessness and his zest for life; he was a devoted
3838 family man and a mentor and cherished friend to many, and he
3939 leaves behind a proud educational legacy that will continue to
4040 benefit the Brownsville community long into the future; now,
4141 therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
4343 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4444 family of Joe A. Rodriguez; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4646 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4747 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4848 memory of Coach Joe Rodriguez.
