5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Joe A. Rodriguez, a beloved resident of |
---|
7 | 7 | | Brownsville, who died at the age of 85; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Edinburg, Joe "Coach" Rodriguez was |
---|
9 | 9 | | born on March 19, 1936; he developed a love of sports at a young |
---|
10 | 10 | | age, and he excelled in baseball as a first baseman at Edinburg |
---|
11 | 11 | | High School; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Joe continued to play baseball for Pan American |
---|
13 | 13 | | College and the Joe Davis Ginners, a semiprofessional league; he |
---|
14 | 14 | | graduated at the age of 20 and soon married his college |
---|
15 | 15 | | sweetheart, Emma Leal; they moved to Brownsville, where he |
---|
16 | 16 | | remained the rest of his life; he and Emma, who preceded him in |
---|
17 | 17 | | death, raised four children and were blessed with seven |
---|
18 | 18 | | grandchildren; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Coach Joe began a long and fulfilling career in |
---|
20 | 20 | | public education by serving as a physical education coach at |
---|
21 | 21 | | Cummings Junior High School; he later coached at Brownsville High |
---|
22 | 22 | | School, where he led baseball teams to appearances at state |
---|
23 | 23 | | semifinals and finals; after becoming a head football coach, he |
---|
24 | 24 | | was named South Texas Coach of the Year for baseball, basketball, |
---|
25 | 25 | | and football; he went on to serve for 27 years as the athletic |
---|
26 | 26 | | director for the Brownsville Independent School District, and |
---|
27 | 27 | | under his leadership, the district earned seven South Texas |
---|
28 | 28 | | Athletic Program of the Year awards; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, An esteemed leader in public education, Coach |
---|
30 | 30 | | Rodriguez served as a Brownsville Independent School District |
---|
31 | 31 | | trustee for 15 years; he was a vice president of the National |
---|
32 | 32 | | Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members, and he was honored for |
---|
33 | 33 | | his leadership as a Hispanic educator by United States Presidents |
---|
34 | 34 | | Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush and by Mexican President |
---|
35 | 35 | | Gustavo Diaz Ordaz; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Coach Joe was admired by his loved ones for his |
---|
37 | 37 | | incomparable fearlessness and his zest for life; he was a devoted |
---|
38 | 38 | | family man and a mentor and cherished friend to many, and he |
---|
39 | 39 | | leaves behind a proud educational legacy that will continue to |
---|
40 | 40 | | benefit the Brownsville community long into the future; now, |
---|
41 | 41 | | therefore, be it |

42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
44 | 44 | | family of Joe A. Rodriguez; and, be it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
46 | 46 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
48 | 48 | | memory of Coach Joe Rodriguez. |
