55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Modesto "Mo" Garcia, who died
77 April 25, 2021, at the age of 92; and
88 WHEREAS, Modesto Garcia was born on May 31, 1928, in San
99 Diego, Texas; he completed his early and secondary education in
1010 his hometown, and he joined the United States Army in 1946; he
1111 served with distinction and was awarded the World War II Victory
1212 Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal for his service in Japan;
1313 after concluding his military service, he returned home to
1414 continue his education in South Texas; and
1515 WHEREAS, Mo attended Del Mar College for two years and was
1616 a member of the basketball team before attending Laredo Junior
1717 College, where he played on the football team; he then
1818 transferred to Southwest Texas State University, where he played
1919 as an offensive guard on the football team and earned
2020 All-Conference honors; he graduated in 1954, and he began a long
2121 and rewarding career as a coach that same year; and
2222 WHEREAS, During his 35 years of coaching, he guided young
2323 athletes at San Diego High School, Rio Grande City High School,
2424 Robstown High School, Falfurrias High School, and Homer Hanna
2525 High School; he retired from coaching in 1987, and over the
2626 course of his career, he amassed an impressive list of
2727 accomplishments that included a football record of 115-83-4,
2828 an appearance in the basketball state finals, eight district
2929 championships in track, and one district championship in golf;
3030 and
3131 WHEREAS, An esteemed citizen and member of the
3232 Brownsville community, he was honored with multiple accolades
3333 for professional excellence and for his dedication as a coach
3434 throughout his career; he served as a director of the Texas
3535 High School Coaches Association and was a longstanding
3636 congregant of Saint Mary's Church, where he served on the
3737 Parish Council and on the finance committee; in all his
3838 endeavors, he was supported by the love and encouragement of
3939 Maria Gloria Valerio Garcia, his wife of 62 years, and his
4040 seven children and his many grandchildren and
4141 great-grandchildren were a source of much pride and joy for
4242 him; and
4343 WHEREAS, Mo Garcia was a beloved husband and father, a
4444 devoted coach and mentor, and a cherished friend to many; he
4545 leaves a lasting legacy in the countless individuals whose lives
4646 he touched, and he will long be remembered with great respect and
4747 admiration by all who were privileged to share in his life; now,
4848 therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
5050 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5151 family of Modesto Garcia; and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5353 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5454 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5555 memory of Mo Garcia.
