5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Modesto "Mo" Garcia, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | April 25, 2021, at the age of 92; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Modesto Garcia was born on May 31, 1928, in San |
---|
9 | 9 | | Diego, Texas; he completed his early and secondary education in |
---|
10 | 10 | | his hometown, and he joined the United States Army in 1946; he |
---|
11 | 11 | | served with distinction and was awarded the World War II Victory |
---|
12 | 12 | | Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal for his service in Japan; |
---|
13 | 13 | | after concluding his military service, he returned home to |
---|
14 | 14 | | continue his education in South Texas; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mo attended Del Mar College for two years and was |
---|
16 | 16 | | a member of the basketball team before attending Laredo Junior |
---|
17 | 17 | | College, where he played on the football team; he then |
---|
18 | 18 | | transferred to Southwest Texas State University, where he played |
---|
19 | 19 | | as an offensive guard on the football team and earned |
---|
20 | 20 | | All-Conference honors; he graduated in 1954, and he began a long |
---|
21 | 21 | | and rewarding career as a coach that same year; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, During his 35 years of coaching, he guided young |
---|
23 | 23 | | athletes at San Diego High School, Rio Grande City High School, |
---|
24 | 24 | | Robstown High School, Falfurrias High School, and Homer Hanna |
---|
25 | 25 | | High School; he retired from coaching in 1987, and over the |
---|
26 | 26 | | course of his career, he amassed an impressive list of |
---|
27 | 27 | | accomplishments that included a football record of 115-83-4, |
---|
28 | 28 | | an appearance in the basketball state finals, eight district |
---|
29 | 29 | | championships in track, and one district championship in golf; |
---|
30 | 30 | | and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, An esteemed citizen and member of the |
---|
32 | 32 | | Brownsville community, he was honored with multiple accolades |
---|
33 | 33 | | for professional excellence and for his dedication as a coach |
---|
34 | 34 | | throughout his career; he served as a director of the Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | High School Coaches Association and was a longstanding |
---|
36 | 36 | | congregant of Saint Mary's Church, where he served on the |
---|
37 | 37 | | Parish Council and on the finance committee; in all his |
---|
38 | 38 | | endeavors, he was supported by the love and encouragement of |
---|
39 | 39 | | Maria Gloria Valerio Garcia, his wife of 62 years, and his |
---|
40 | 40 | | seven children and his many grandchildren and |
---|
41 | 41 | | great-grandchildren were a source of much pride and joy for |
---|
42 | 42 | | him; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Mo Garcia was a beloved husband and father, a |
---|
44 | 44 | | devoted coach and mentor, and a cherished friend to many; he |
---|
45 | 45 | | leaves a lasting legacy in the countless individuals whose lives |
---|
46 | 46 | | he touched, and he will long be remembered with great respect and |
---|
47 | 47 | | admiration by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, |
---|
48 | 48 | | therefore, be it |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
50 | 50 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
51 | 51 | | family of Modesto Garcia; and, be it further |
---|
52 | 52 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
53 | 53 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
54 | 54 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |

55 | 55 | | memory of Mo Garcia. |
