55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Margaret Wright, who died December 6,
77 2020, at the age of 78; and
88 WHEREAS, Margaret Wright was a much-treasured citizen and
99 a legendary musician whose artistry and compassion for others had
1010 a profound impact on her East Austin community; and
1111 WHEREAS, Born on February 21, 1942, she grew up in a
1212 musical family; she attended L. C. Anderson High School, and she
1313 went on to graduate from Huston-Tillotson University in 1964; and
1414 WHEREAS, She enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as an
1515 elementary school teacher, and she taught music for many years at
1616 the Texas Preparatory School, where she focused on instilling in
1717 her students the discipline and emotional spirit necessary to
1818 become successful musicians; and
1919 WHEREAS, She was best known as a beloved piano player and
2020 singer who performed at venues across the city, including the
2121 Driskill Hotel, Ego's, Cedar Street, the Cloak Room, Charlie's,
2222 the Skylark Lounge, and many others; her encyclopedic knowledge
2323 of American music styles and songs and her enthusiasm for playing
2424 before every type of audience made her a legend in the Austin
2525 music community; she was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of
2626 Fame in 2015; and
2727 WHEREAS, She and her husband, Joe Wright, enjoyed more than
2828 50 years of marriage together; they were blessed with a daughter,
2929 Joely, who was a source of much pride and joy for her; and
3030 WHEREAS, A woman of courage, determination, and kindness,
3131 she served as a mentor to many of her fellow musicians, and she
3232 will long be remembered for her countless contributions to her
3333 community; and
3434 WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife and mother, and she leaves
3535 behind memories that will be cherished forever by all who were
3636 privileged to share in her life; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3838 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3939 family of Margaret Wright; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4141 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4242 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4343 memory of Margaret Wright.
