5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Margaret Wright, who died December 6, |

7 | 7 | | 2020, at the age of 78; and |

8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Margaret Wright was a much-treasured citizen and |
---|
9 | 9 | | a legendary musician whose artistry and compassion for others had |
---|
10 | 10 | | a profound impact on her East Austin community; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Born on February 21, 1942, she grew up in a |
---|
12 | 12 | | musical family; she attended L. C. Anderson High School, and she |
---|
13 | 13 | | went on to graduate from Huston-Tillotson University in 1964; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, She enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as an |
---|
15 | 15 | | elementary school teacher, and she taught music for many years at |
---|
16 | 16 | | the Texas Preparatory School, where she focused on instilling in |
---|
17 | 17 | | her students the discipline and emotional spirit necessary to |
---|
18 | 18 | | become successful musicians; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, She was best known as a beloved piano player and |
---|
20 | 20 | | singer who performed at venues across the city, including the |
---|
21 | 21 | | Driskill Hotel, Ego's, Cedar Street, the Cloak Room, Charlie's, |
---|
22 | 22 | | the Skylark Lounge, and many others; her encyclopedic knowledge |
---|
23 | 23 | | of American music styles and songs and her enthusiasm for playing |
---|
24 | 24 | | before every type of audience made her a legend in the Austin |
---|
25 | 25 | | music community; she was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of |
---|
26 | 26 | | Fame in 2015; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, She and her husband, Joe Wright, enjoyed more than |
---|
28 | 28 | | 50 years of marriage together; they were blessed with a daughter, |
---|
29 | 29 | | Joely, who was a source of much pride and joy for her; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, A woman of courage, determination, and kindness, |
---|
31 | 31 | | she served as a mentor to many of her fellow musicians, and she |
---|
32 | 32 | | will long be remembered for her countless contributions to her |
---|
33 | 33 | | community; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife and mother, and she leaves |
---|
35 | 35 | | behind memories that will be cherished forever by all who were |
---|
36 | 36 | | privileged to share in her life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
39 | 39 | | family of Margaret Wright; and, be it further |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
41 | 41 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
