55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Stephen K. Balas, who died April 20,
77 2021, at the age of 75; and
88 WHEREAS, Steve Balas was born on February 20, 1946, in
99 Lindsay, California, and his family moved to Texas when he was a
1010 young child; at the age of six, he met Linda Thomas, and the two
1111 remained friends and sweethearts throughout their school years
1212 and were later joined together in marriage; Steve graduated from
1313 Eagle Lake High School in 1964 and went on to earn a degree in
1414 pharmacy from The University of Texas at Austin in 1969; and
1515 WHEREAS, A respected pillar of the Eagle Lake community, he
1616 enjoyed a rewarding career as the owner and operator of the Eagle
1717 Lake Drug Store; he fostered a warm and welcoming atmosphere for
1818 his family of employees, and he was known for brightening the
1919 days of the many loyal customers he served with his friendly
2020 demeanor and personable conversations; through the help of his
2121 father-in-law, he learned about growing rice, and he became a
2222 knowledgeable and successful rice farmer; and
2323 WHEREAS, Steve took great pleasure in serving his
2424 community, and he gave generously of his time as a member of the
2525 boards of numerous civic, professional, and charitable
2626 organizations; he was appointed to the Lower Colorado River
2727 Authority by Governor Perry, and he was a member of the Colorado
2828 River Alliance and the Colorado River Land Trust; and
2929 WHEREAS, Steve Balas was the devoted father of the late
3030 Renee Balas Bullard and the late Brian Thomas Balas, and he
3131 cherished his two grandsons, Trevor Thomas Bullard and Brandon
3232 Bullard; he found great joy in traveling the world with his wife
3333 and in entertaining friends and loved ones at their homes in
3434 Eagle Lake and the Vineyard; he was a treasured member of his
3535 community and an exemplary citizen, and he leaves behind memories
3636 that will live on in the hearts of his many friends and loved
3737 ones; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3939 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4040 family of Stephen K. Balas; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4242 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4343 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4444 memory of Steve Balas.
