| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Stephen K. Balas, who died April 20, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | 2021, at the age of 75; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Steve Balas was born on February 20, 1946, in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Lindsay, California, and his family moved to Texas when he was a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | young child; at the age of six, he met Linda Thomas, and the two |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | remained friends and sweethearts throughout their school years |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and were later joined together in marriage; Steve graduated from |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Eagle Lake High School in 1964 and went on to earn a degree in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | pharmacy from The University of Texas at Austin in 1969; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, A respected pillar of the Eagle Lake community, he |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | enjoyed a rewarding career as the owner and operator of the Eagle |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Lake Drug Store; he fostered a warm and welcoming atmosphere for |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | his family of employees, and he was known for brightening the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | days of the many loyal customers he served with his friendly |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | demeanor and personable conversations; through the help of his |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | father-in-law, he learned about growing rice, and he became a |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | knowledgeable and successful rice farmer; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Steve took great pleasure in serving his |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | community, and he gave generously of his time as a member of the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | boards of numerous civic, professional, and charitable |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | organizations; he was appointed to the Lower Colorado River |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Authority by Governor Perry, and he was a member of the Colorado |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | River Alliance and the Colorado River Land Trust; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Steve Balas was the devoted father of the late |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Renee Balas Bullard and the late Brian Thomas Balas, and he |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | cherished his two grandsons, Trevor Thomas Bullard and Brandon |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Bullard; he found great joy in traveling the world with his wife |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | and in entertaining friends and loved ones at their homes in |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Eagle Lake and the Vineyard; he was a treasured member of his |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | community and an exemplary citizen, and he leaves behind memories |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | that will live on in the hearts of his many friends and loved |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | ones; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | family of Stephen K. Balas; and, be it further |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
