5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of the Honorable George P. Kazen, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | April 27, 2021, at the age of 81; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, George Kazen was an exemplary citizen and a highly |
---|
9 | 9 | | regarded federal judge whose fairness, integrity, and thorough |
---|
10 | 10 | | knowledge of the law had a profound impact on jurisprudence in |
---|
11 | 11 | | our state and nation; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Born on February 29, 1940, he grew up in Laredo |
---|
13 | 13 | | and attended Saint Joseph's Academy; he went on to earn a degree |
---|
14 | 14 | | from The University of Texas School of Law, where he was a member |
---|
15 | 15 | | of the Law Review; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Judge Kazen was nominated by President Jimmy |
---|
17 | 17 | | Carter to a seat on the United States District Court in 1979, and |
---|
18 | 18 | | he served with distinction for nearly 40 years with the Laredo |
---|
19 | 19 | | Division of the Southern District of Texas; he served as chief |
---|
20 | 20 | | judge for the district from 1996 to 2003, and he was appointed to |
---|
21 | 21 | | the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court in 2003; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, He assumed senior status in 2009 but remained |
---|
23 | 23 | | active, and he continued to handle a third of the Laredo |
---|
24 | 24 | | Division's civil and criminal docket until his retirement in |
---|
25 | 25 | | 2018; in recognition of his years of exceptional service, the |
---|
26 | 26 | | federal courthouse in Laredo was named in his honor; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, A devout Catholic who practiced his faith in his |
---|
28 | 28 | | daily life, Judge Kazen was involved in supporting a number of |
---|
29 | 29 | | charitable Catholic organizations, and he served as a member of |
---|
30 | 30 | | the Red Mass planning committee for the Diocese of Laredo since |
---|
31 | 31 | | its inception in 2000; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband to the late Barbara Ann |
---|
33 | 33 | | Kazen and a loving father to his four children; he was respected |
---|
34 | 34 | | and admired by all who were privileged to share in his life, and |
---|
35 | 35 | | he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his |
---|
36 | 36 | | family and his countless friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
39 | 39 | | family of George P. Kazen; and, be it further |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
41 | 41 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
43 | 43 | | memory of George Kazen. |
