11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 480
22 WHEREAS, The Longview News-Journal is celebrating the
33 150th anniversary of the newspaper business in Longview in 2021,
44 marking a significant milestone in the rich history of the
55 community; and
66 WHEREAS, In 1871, James Stephen Hogg, the future governor
77 of Texas, started a thrice-weekly newspaper in Longview, setting
88 the type himself by hand; a year later, E. S. and J. S. Terry
99 launched a second newspaper, the Longview New Era; a third
1010 newspaper, the News Item, was started in 1873, the year that
1111 Gregg County was created; and
1212 WHEREAS, In 1885, the Longview Clarion was established by
1313 F. M. Marschalk, a veteran newspaperman from Mississippi, and
1414 when he died in 1888, the publication was taken over by J. W.
1515 Johnson, who renamed it the Times-Clarion; after his death in
1616 1916, his widow continued to run the paper until 1918, when she
1717 sold it to G. B. Whitley, and in 1925, the Times-Clarion and
1818 another newspaper, the Longview Leader, which had been
1919 established in 1923, were combined as the Longview Daily News
2020 under editor William J. Tucker; and
2121 WHEREAS, From 1929 to 1934, the paper changed hands four
2222 times; in February 1931, the Longview Morning Journal was
2323 started, and the following month, both the Daily News and the
2424 Morning Journal were purchased by Clarence E. Faulk, who was at
2525 the time the president of Delta Airlines; in 1934, Carl Estes
2626 became the owner and publisher of both papers, and over the next
2727 33 years, he became known as "Mr. East Texas" for his tireless
2828 promotion of the industrial and commercial development of the
2929 region; and
3030 WHEREAS, Mr. Estes died in 1967, and in 1978, his widow,
3131 Margaret Estes, sold the News and the Journal to Cox Enterprises,
3232 which built a new facility for both papers in 1986 and then
3333 combined them in 1988 as the Longview News-Journal; the paper has
3434 changed hands several times over the past three decades, and
3535 since September 2015, it has been part of M. Roberts Media, a
3636 family-owned publishing company that operates out of Longview;
3737 and
3838 WHEREAS, Today, the Longview News-Journal is the heir to a
3939 proud tradition of journalism and community engagement that goes
4040 back a century and a half, and its staff may indeed take great
4141 pride in the vital role the publication plays in the civic
4242 culture and prosperity of Longview and Gregg County; now,
4343 therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
4545 Legislature, hereby commemorate the 150th anniversary of the
4646 newspaper business in Longview and extend to all those associated
4747 with the Longview News-Journal sincere best wishes for continued
4848 success in their important work; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5050 prepared for the Longview News-Journal as an expression of high
5151 regard from the Texas Senate.
