2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Longview News-Journal is celebrating the |

3 | 3 | | 150th anniversary of the newspaper business in Longview in 2021, |
---|
4 | 4 | | marking a significant milestone in the rich history of the |
---|
5 | 5 | | community; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, In 1871, James Stephen Hogg, the future governor |
---|
7 | 7 | | of Texas, started a thrice-weekly newspaper in Longview, setting |
---|
8 | 8 | | the type himself by hand; a year later, E. S. and J. S. Terry |
---|
9 | 9 | | launched a second newspaper, the Longview New Era; a third |
---|
10 | 10 | | newspaper, the News Item, was started in 1873, the year that |
---|
11 | 11 | | Gregg County was created; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In 1885, the Longview Clarion was established by |
---|
13 | 13 | | F. M. Marschalk, a veteran newspaperman from Mississippi, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | when he died in 1888, the publication was taken over by J. W. |
---|
15 | 15 | | Johnson, who renamed it the Times-Clarion; after his death in |
---|
16 | 16 | | 1916, his widow continued to run the paper until 1918, when she |
---|
17 | 17 | | sold it to G. B. Whitley, and in 1925, the Times-Clarion and |
---|
18 | 18 | | another newspaper, the Longview Leader, which had been |
---|
19 | 19 | | established in 1923, were combined as the Longview Daily News |
---|
20 | 20 | | under editor William J. Tucker; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, From 1929 to 1934, the paper changed hands four |
---|
22 | 22 | | times; in February 1931, the Longview Morning Journal was |
---|
23 | 23 | | started, and the following month, both the Daily News and the |
---|
24 | 24 | | Morning Journal were purchased by Clarence E. Faulk, who was at |
---|
25 | 25 | | the time the president of Delta Airlines; in 1934, Carl Estes |
---|
26 | 26 | | became the owner and publisher of both papers, and over the next |
---|
27 | 27 | | 33 years, he became known as "Mr. East Texas" for his tireless |
---|
28 | 28 | | promotion of the industrial and commercial development of the |
---|
29 | 29 | | region; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Estes died in 1967, and in 1978, his widow, |
---|
31 | 31 | | Margaret Estes, sold the News and the Journal to Cox Enterprises, |
---|
32 | 32 | | which built a new facility for both papers in 1986 and then |
---|
33 | 33 | | combined them in 1988 as the Longview News-Journal; the paper has |
---|
34 | 34 | | changed hands several times over the past three decades, and |
---|
35 | 35 | | since September 2015, it has been part of M. Roberts Media, a |
---|
36 | 36 | | family-owned publishing company that operates out of Longview; |
---|
37 | 37 | | and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Longview News-Journal is the heir to a |
---|
39 | 39 | | proud tradition of journalism and community engagement that goes |
---|
40 | 40 | | back a century and a half, and its staff may indeed take great |
---|
41 | 41 | | pride in the vital role the publication plays in the civic |
---|
42 | 42 | | culture and prosperity of Longview and Gregg County; now, |
---|
43 | 43 | | therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 150th anniversary of the |
---|
46 | 46 | | newspaper business in Longview and extend to all those associated |
---|
47 | 47 | | with the Longview News-Journal sincere best wishes for continued |
---|
48 | 48 | | success in their important work; and, be it further |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
50 | 50 | | prepared for the Longview News-Journal as an expression of high |
---|
51 | 51 | | regard from the Texas Senate. |
