44 Alan Russell Erwin
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Alan Russell Erwin, who died November
77 12, 2019, at the age of 75; and
88 WHEREAS, An esteemed member of the Austin community, Alan
99 Erwin had a rewarding life of service and was a devoted husband,
1010 father, and grandfather; he was a distinguished veteran, an
1111 esteemed journalist and author, a respected statesman, and a
1212 faithful Christian servant; and
1313 WHEREAS, Alan Erwin was born on September 4, 1944, in
1414 Greenville, Texas; he began cultivating his writing skills as a
1515 high school student working as a weekly reporter and columnist
1616 for the Baytown Sun, and he went on to earn a bachelor of arts
1717 degree in communications from The University of Texas at Austin;
1818 he married Gay Taylor in December of 1967, and three weeks later,
1919 he joined the United States Navy; after graduating from Officer
2020 Candidate School in Rhode Island, he was stationed aboard the USS
2121 Lexington to serve as the ship's communications and public
2222 affairs officer; in 1969, he was assigned to serve in Vietnam as
2323 an advisor to the Vietnamese Navy's Swift Boat division; and
2424 WHEREAS, Alan worked as a reporter, editor, and publisher
2525 for such leading newspapers as the Dallas Morning News, the
2626 Houston Chronicle, and the New York Times, and he served as the
2727 capitol correspondent for the Hartman newspaper group; he
2828 accomplished his dream of writing a great American novel in 1984,
2929 when he published The Power Exchange; and
3030 WHEREAS, Alan's political career began with his service as
3131 chief of staff for Congressman Bob Casey from Houston; he served
3232 as an advisor and a speech writer for Governor Dolph Briscoe, and
3333 in 1972, the governor appointed him to the Office of
3434 State-Federal Relations in Washington, D.C.; he was one of the
3535 three commissioners first appointed to the Texas Public Utility
3636 Commission, and after he left state government, he served as
3737 senior vice president and manager of the Houston division of Hill
3838 and Knowlton Public Relations; he then established his own
3939 consulting firm, Erwin and Associates; and
4040 WHEREAS, Alan and Gay shared 51 years of marriage, and they
4141 were longtime members of the Episcopal Church of the Good
4242 Shepherd in Austin; they were blessed with three sons, Andy,
4343 Josh, and Will Erwin, and their seven grandchildren enriched his
4444 life immeasurably; and
4545 WHEREAS, Alan remained committed to the United States Navy
4646 and his fellow veterans throughout his life, and he was proud to
4747 have helped raise $1.5 million in donations to commission the
4848 Vietnam Veterans Monument currently standing on the grounds of
4949 the Texas Capitol; he was a true Texas gentleman and a beloved
5050 member of his community, and he leaves behind memories that will
5151 long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in his life;
5252 now, therefore, be it
5353 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
5454 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5555 family of Alan Russell Erwin; and, be it further
5656 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5757 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5858 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5959 memory of Alan Erwin.
