| 4 | 4 | | Schools (CHAPS) program of The University of Texas Rio Grande |

| 5 | 5 | | Valley on receiving the 2020 Governor's Award for Historic |

| 6 | 6 | | Preservation; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The state's most prestigious honor for historic |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | preservation, the Governor's Award has been presented by the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Texas Historical Commission since 1991 to individuals and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | organizations for outstanding efforts in preserving the cultural |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and historic resources of Texas; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Established in 2009 by founding director |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Dr. Russell Skowronek, CHAPS brings scholars from UTRGV into |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | area schools to train students from kindergarten through high |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | school in the stewardship of natural resources and historical |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | sites; the program helps create archaeologically and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | historically literate citizens while preparing them for |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | continuing studies in science, technology, engineering, and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | mathematics; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Under the direction of Dr. Walter Díaz, dean of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the College of Liberal Arts, the program is currently led by |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | associate director Dr. Christopher L. Miller of the Department |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | of History, co-director Dr. Juan Gonzalez of the School of Earth, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Environmental, and Marine Sciences, and project director Roseann |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Bacha-Garza of the Department of Anthropology, and it also |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | utilizes the talents of UTRGV faculty from the biology, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | communication, education, and geology departments; in addition, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | it has forged beneficial partnerships with the National Park |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Service, the Museum of South Texas History, the Zapata County |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Museum of History, Revive Fort Ringgold, the Webb County Heritage |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Foundation, and the Historic Brownsville Museum; and |

| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The program's traveling exhibits, War and Peace on |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | the Rio Grande 1861-1867 and Discovering Fort Brown: The First |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Military Border Post in Texas, have been on display at museums |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | and other sites from Laredo to Corpus Christi and have drawn more |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | than 40,000 visitors, and CHAPS and its faculty have been |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | featured on many local, state, national, and international media |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | broadcast outlets, including National Public Radio and the BBC |
|---|

| 40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, In addition to the Governor's Award, the program |

| 41 | 41 | | has received the 2020 Mary Faye Barnes Award for Excellence in |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Community History Projects from the Texas Oral History |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | Association; its earlier awards have included the Daniel G. |

| 44 | 44 | | Roberts Award for Excellence in Public Historical Archaeology |

| 45 | 45 | | from the Society for Historical Archaeology, the THC Award of |

| 46 | 46 | | Merit, and the Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding |

| 47 | 47 | | Contributions of Service to Texas Archeology from the Texas |

|---|
| 49 | 49 | | WHEREAS, A unique and dynamic educational program, CHAPS |

| 50 | 50 | | has inspired countless young people to explore and engage with |
|---|
| 51 | 51 | | the rich history and natural wonders of this important region of |
|---|
| 52 | 52 | | the Lone Star State, and it is truly deserving of this notable |
|---|
| 53 | 53 | | accolade; now, therefore, be it |

| 54 | 54 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|---|
| 55 | 55 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate the Community Historical |
|---|
| 56 | 56 | | Archaeology Project with Schools on its receipt of the 2020 |

| 57 | 57 | | Governor's Award for Historic Preservation and extend to all |

| 58 | 58 | | those associated with the program sincere best wishes for |
|---|
