| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Montague County Historical Commission hosted |

| 3 | 3 | | the dedication of a Texas Historical Marker at the former site of |

| 4 | 4 | | Bob Stone Camp in Nocona on April 27, 2021; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Confederate veterans of the Civil War began |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | gathering in Montague County for an annual reunion in 1880; named |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | for their late comrade-in-arms, Colonel Bob Stone, the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | encampment drew veterans and their families each year, and by |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 1893, the event became affiliated with a national organization |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | known as United Confederate Veterans; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, In 1899, Nocona became the permanent home of the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | camp, situated west of the town on property donated by D. C. |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Jordan, who also donated the land for the town and its cemetery; |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | each year, thousands of Confederate and Union veterans and their |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | families arrived on special trains from Gainesville to dine |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | together and hear speakers and attend such events as games and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | horse races; the camp remained active until the last Civil War |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | veterans in the area died in the 1940s; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, A marker at this site acknowledges a seminal event |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | in this country's history and provides an important record for |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | future generations; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the dedication of a Texas |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Historical Marker at Bob Stone Camp in Nocona; and, be it further |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | prepared for the Montague County Historical Commission as an |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
