11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 55
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton in honor
44 of the 175th anniversary of the university's founding, which was
55 celebrated in 2020; and
66 WHEREAS, The university traces its roots to February 1,
77 1845, when the Republic of Texas approved the charter for the
88 first Baptist university west of the Mississippi; named Baylor
99 University, it was established in Independence with
1010 coeducational classes and a collegiate preparatory department;
1111 separate men's and women's departments were created in 1851, and
1212 in 1886, the women's department relocated to Belton as Baylor
1313 Female College; that same year, the men's department
1414 consolidated with Waco University and retained the name Baylor
1515 University; and
1616 WHEREAS, The Belton campus was renamed Baylor College for
1717 Women in 1925, Mary Hardin-Baylor College in 1934, and the
1818 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1978; the university's many
1919 historical accomplishments include founding the first journalism
2020 school in a college for women in the United States and becoming
2121 the first Texas Baptist university to enjoy full membership in
2222 the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and
2323 WHEREAS, Today, UMHB serves a diverse enrollment of more
2424 than 3,900 students from 31 countries and offers a wide range of
2525 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs that include
2626 business administration, education, fine arts, engineering,
2727 nursing, pre-veterinary medicine, physical therapy, and Christian
2828 studies; moreover, the university has invested over $135 million in
2929 new campus facilities in recent years; and
3030 WHEREAS, Students, faculty, and staff of the University of
3131 Mary Hardin-Baylor may indeed take great pride in their
3232 institution's long history of educational excellence and its
3333 ongoing contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be
3434 it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3636 Legislature, hereby commend the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor
3737 on its outstanding educational programs and extend sincere
3838 congratulations to all those associated with the school on its
3939 success; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4141 honor of this exemplary institution.
