2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton in honor |
---|
4 | 4 | | of the 175th anniversary of the university's founding, which was |
---|
5 | 5 | | celebrated in 2020; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The university traces its roots to February 1, |
---|
7 | 7 | | 1845, when the Republic of Texas approved the charter for the |
---|
8 | 8 | | first Baptist university west of the Mississippi; named Baylor |
---|
9 | 9 | | University, it was established in Independence with |
---|
10 | 10 | | coeducational classes and a collegiate preparatory department; |
---|
11 | 11 | | separate men's and women's departments were created in 1851, and |
---|
12 | 12 | | in 1886, the women's department relocated to Belton as Baylor |
---|
13 | 13 | | Female College; that same year, the men's department |
---|
14 | 14 | | consolidated with Waco University and retained the name Baylor |
---|
15 | 15 | | University; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The Belton campus was renamed Baylor College for |
---|
17 | 17 | | Women in 1925, Mary Hardin-Baylor College in 1934, and the |
---|
18 | 18 | | University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1978; the university's many |
---|
19 | 19 | | historical accomplishments include founding the first journalism |
---|
20 | 20 | | school in a college for women in the United States and becoming |
---|
21 | 21 | | the first Texas Baptist university to enjoy full membership in |
---|
22 | 22 | | the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Today, UMHB serves a diverse enrollment of more |
---|
24 | 24 | | than 3,900 students from 31 countries and offers a wide range of |
---|
25 | 25 | | undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs that include |
---|
26 | 26 | | business administration, education, fine arts, engineering, |
---|
27 | 27 | | nursing, pre-veterinary medicine, physical therapy, and Christian |
---|
28 | 28 | | studies; moreover, the university has invested over $135 million in |
---|
29 | 29 | | new campus facilities in recent years; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Students, faculty, and staff of the University of |
---|
31 | 31 | | Mary Hardin-Baylor may indeed take great pride in their |
---|
32 | 32 | | institution's long history of educational excellence and its |
---|
33 | 33 | | ongoing contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be |
---|
34 | 34 | | it |

35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby commend the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor |

37 | 37 | | on its outstanding educational programs and extend sincere |

38 | 38 | | congratulations to all those associated with the school on its |
---|
39 | 39 | | success; and, be it further |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
