2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | join the Dallas Independent School District and the people of |
---|
4 | 4 | | Dallas in celebrating the dedication of the renovated Franklin |
---|
5 | 5 | | Delano Roosevelt High School; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School opened its |
---|
7 | 7 | | doors to students in 1963 as the district's first new |
---|
8 | 8 | | African-American-only high school to be constructed since 1939; |
---|
9 | 9 | | the opening proved to be controversial, and threats from militant |
---|
10 | 10 | | hate groups compelled a coalition of African American men from |
---|
11 | 11 | | the Cedar Crest community to provide 24-hour security for the |
---|
12 | 12 | | campus; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Today, Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School |
---|
14 | 14 | | serves as an outstanding example of what can happen when a school |
---|
15 | 15 | | and community come together; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, A bond issue passed by voters in 2015 provided |
---|
17 | 17 | | funds for a complete campus renovation; improvements include a |
---|
18 | 18 | | fine arts addition, a competition gym and indoor athletic |
---|
19 | 19 | | facilities, new industrial culinary facilities, a classroom |
---|
20 | 20 | | suite for special education students, a community garden with |
---|
21 | 21 | | greenhouses and raised beds, and many other modern features; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Beginning in August of 2021, this historic campus |
---|
23 | 23 | | will also become a STEAM high school focused on holistic public |
---|
24 | 24 | | health, public safety, humanities, and the arts; the campus |
---|
25 | 25 | | restoration will better allow the school to achieve its mission of |
---|
26 | 26 | | empowering scholars through an innovative, project-based |
---|
27 | 27 | | curriculum with an emphasis on global community public health in a |
---|
28 | 28 | | real-world and diverse learning environment; now, therefore, be it |
---|
29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Dallas Independent School |
---|
31 | 31 | | District, the Dallas community, and all associated with Franklin |
---|
32 | 32 | | Delano Roosevelt High School on their commitment to excellence in |
---|
33 | 33 | | education and extend to those who serve on the campus best wishes |
---|
34 | 34 | | for continued success in this exciting new chapter in the life of |
---|
35 | 35 | | the school; and, be it further |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

37 | 37 | | the school as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
