11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 566
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Dale Hansen, who is retiring on September 2, 2021, and
44 bringing to a close a distinguished career in sports broadcasting
55 that has spanned four decades; and
66 WHEREAS, Dale Hansen began his broadcasting career as a
77 radio disc jockey and operations manager in Newton, Iowa; he
88 worked at various radio and television stations across the
99 Midwest before moving to Dallas in 1980 and taking a position at
1010 KDFW-TV; in 1983, he joined the staff of WFAA-TV, where he has
1111 served for 38 years and has enjoyed a reputation as one of the
1212 nation's premier sportscasters; and
1313 WHEREAS, He has been at the forefront of coverage of many of
1414 the state's biggest sports stories, such as the pay-to-play scandal
1515 at Southern Methodist University, for which he earned a Peabody
1616 Award for Distinguished Journalism and an Alfred I.
1717 duPont-Columbia University Award; he is a two-time Associated
1818 Press Sportscaster of the Year and is a recipient of the Radio
1919 Television Digital News Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award;
2020 and
2121 WHEREAS, Always willing to comment on controversial issues
2222 facing sports and society, he has used his platform to provide a
2323 thoughtful and fair-minded perspective on such issues as anthem
2424 protests, racism, domestic violence, and the pandemic; and
2525 WHEREAS, He has been a human rights advocate and has lent
2626 his voice to countless civic and philanthropic efforts, notably
2727 through the Dale Hansen Golf Classic and the Scholar-Athlete of
2828 the Week program; his annual Thank God for Kids program at
2929 Christmas has moved and inspired people for nearly 40 years; and
3030 WHEREAS, Having covered Super Bowls, World Series, Stanley
3131 Cup Finals, National Basketball Association Finals, and
3232 countless other events, he is known nationally and
3333 internationally for his legendary career, yet his influential
3434 voice on matters of equality and respect for others has been
3535 every bit as significant as his work in the field of sports; now,
3636 therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3838 Legislature, hereby commend Dale Hansen on his long and
3939 illustrious career in broadcasting and on his exceptional
4040 contributions to his community and extend to him best wishes for
4141 continued success in his endeavors; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4343 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
