2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the City of Brownsville in honor of the 168th |
---|
4 | 4 | | anniversary of the city's incorporation, which took place on |
---|
5 | 5 | | February 7, 2021; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The origins of Brownsville trace back to a small |
---|
7 | 7 | | settlement surrounding Fort Brown, a United States military |
---|
8 | 8 | | outpost constructed in 1846; it was named in honor of Major Jacob |
---|
9 | 9 | | Brown, who was killed during an attack on the fort at the onset of |
---|
10 | 10 | | the Mexican-American War; in 1848, the same year the area became |
---|
11 | 11 | | part of the State of Texas following the Treaty of |
---|
12 | 12 | | Guadalupe-Hidalgo, the settlement was established as |
---|
13 | 13 | | Brownsville, and the city was incorporated in 1853; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Brownsville became a center of trade with Mexico |
---|
15 | 15 | | and European nations; the city forged ahead in the 20th century |
---|
16 | 16 | | with the installation of railroads and the expansion of |
---|
17 | 17 | | commercial farming, and in 1936, the city established a port and |
---|
18 | 18 | | shipping channel to the Gulf of Mexico; as the population has |
---|
19 | 19 | | grown from 6,000 in 1900 to more than 180,000 today, the city has |
---|
20 | 20 | | maintained its reputation as a hub of international culture; the |
---|
21 | 21 | | largest city in the Rio Grande Valley, it serves as an active |
---|
22 | 22 | | gateway between two countries that are joined by hundreds of |
---|
23 | 23 | | years of custom and family; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Brownsville have fostered a |
---|
25 | 25 | | tradition of progress that has continued into the new millennium; |
---|
26 | 26 | | in 2001 and 2014, Brownsville was named an All-American City by |
---|
27 | 27 | | the National Civic League for its outstanding accomplishments in |
---|
28 | 28 | | improving economic development, community health, and civic |
---|
29 | 29 | | engagement; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to |
---|
31 | 31 | | build an even brighter future, the citizens of Brownsville are |
---|
32 | 32 | | justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to |
---|
33 | 33 | | honor their many contributions to the story of the Lone Star |
---|
34 | 34 | | State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 168th anniversary of the |
---|
37 | 37 | | incorporation of Brownsville and extend to its residents sincere |
---|
38 | 38 | | best wishes for continued happiness and success; and, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | further |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
