55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, Sammie Ward of Sam's Barber Shop in San Antonio has
77 distinguished himself as a leader in his community through his
88 efforts as a businessman, an advocate, and a local historian; and
99 WHEREAS, A native of Gonzales, Sam Ward began cutting hair at
1010 Randolph Air Force Base, and at the age of 75, he is one of the
1111 oldest Black barbers still working in San Antonio; for several
1212 decades, he has been serving his customers at Sam's Barber Shop at
1313 East Commerce Street, on the East Side of San Antonio; over the
1414 years, he has cut the hair of multiple generations of the same
1515 families, and his shop has established itself as a place where area
1616 residents can gather to share stories, build relationships, and
1717 discuss issues of importance to the community; and
1818 WHEREAS, Mr. Ward has long been a stalwart supporter of his
1919 neighborhood, serving as its unofficial historian, as a mentor and
2020 counselor to younger people, and as an advocate for new businesses;
2121 his wisdom and generosity have earned him many loyal customers, and
2222 during the COVID-19 pandemic, he volunteered his shop as a site for
2323 delivering vaccinations to the public as part of the "Shots at the
2424 Shop" initiative; and
2525 WHEREAS, Those Texas businesspeople who build a record of
2626 dependability and longevity enjoy a special degree of esteem in
2727 their communities, and for many years, Sam Ward has been a beloved
2828 and respected champion for the East Side of San Antonio; now,
2929 therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3131 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Sammie Ward for his
3232 long service to his community and extend to him sincere best wishes
3333 for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3535 prepared for Mr. Ward as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3636 House of Representatives.
