| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud Pakistani Americans are marking the 74th |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | anniversary of Pakistan's independence on August 14, 2021; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Present-day Pakistan and other parts of the Indian |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | subcontinent were colonized by the British beginning in the 1750s, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | and British rule continued for nearly 200 years; an independence |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | movement took root in the early 20th century and gained strength in |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | the decades that followed; in the midst of this seismic change, the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | head of the All India Muslim League, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, strove to |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | ensure the security of the Muslim minority by demanding a separate, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | self-governing state; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In the years immediately following World War II, the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | British government sought to withdraw from the region; Prime |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Minister Clement Attlee ceded control in August 1947, and India and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Pakistan became two separate countries; Pakistanis chose |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Mr. Jinnah, known as Quaid-e Azam, or "Great Leader," to be |

| 21 | 21 | | governor-general of their new nation; though he succumbed to |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | illness just 13 months after achieving his dream of independence |

| 23 | 23 | | for his native land, his vision sustained Pakistan during its |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | difficult early days; almost three-quarters of a century later, the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | country is home to more than 225 million people, and individuals who |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | trace their heritage to Pakistan are valued residents of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | communities around the globe; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The observance of Pakistan Independence Day |

| 29 | 29 | | provides an opportunity for Texans of Pakistani descent to |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | celebrate their rich cultural heritage, and it is indeed a pleasure |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | to join in marking this significant occasion; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate Pakistan |

| 34 | 34 | | Independence Day on August 14, 2021, and pay tribute to the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | important contributions Pakistani Americans have made to our state |
|---|
