55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, A full and generous life devoted to the service of
77 his nation has drawn to a close with the death of retired U.S. Army
88 Colonel Ralph C. Gauer Sr. on June 3, 2021; and
99 WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, Ralph Gauer received his
1010 bachelor's degree from Loyola University, and in June 1958, he
1111 joined the U.S. Army and embarked on a distinguished military
1212 career that spanned three decades; he served around the world,
1313 including assignments with special operations units in Central and
1414 South America, Vietnam, and Korea, and later in life, he earned a
1515 master's degree in government from the University of Maryland and
1616 graduated from the U.S. Army War College and the National War
1717 College; and
1818 WHEREAS, Over the course of his exemplary 31-year tenure in
1919 the army, Colonel Gauer was the senior staff intelligence officer
2020 for the 1st Cavalry Division and the III Corps, where he later
2121 became interim chief of staff; he also served as Deputy C2 of the
2222 United States/Republic of Korea Combined Forces Command, and he
2323 commanded the 312th Military Intelligence Battalion and the 504th
2424 Military Intelligence Brigade; in addition, he served many faculty
2525 assignments at the army's John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center
2626 and School at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he eventually
2727 became director of its School of International Studies; and
2828 WHEREAS, After retiring from the army in 1990, Colonel Gauer
2929 started his own business, RCG Media Services, which provided
3030 military and international news reports to television stations; in
3131 1997, he settled in Austin, where he worked for State Senator Troy
3232 Fraser on veterans and national defense issues and served as vice
3333 chair of the Texas Military Preparedness Commission; he retired
3434 again in 2017, but he remained active in veterans and military
3535 issues as a leading member of the Association of the U.S. Army; and
3636 WHEREAS, Colonel Gauer's numerous military decorations
3737 included the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star Medal, and in
3838 civilian life, he earned the Spirit of America Medal from the Good
3939 Soldier Foundation, the Armed Services YMCA Volunteer Excellence
4040 Award, and the Jefferson Award for Public Service from the American
4141 Institute for Public Service, among other honors; and
4242 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Colonel Gauer enjoyed the love
4343 and support of his wife, Mary; he was the proud father of four
4444 children, Ralph, Todd, Laura, and the late Joseph August Gauer III,
4545 and he was blessed with a granddaughter, Katherine, and a
4646 great-granddaughter, Isla; and
4747 WHEREAS, A distinguished soldier and a dedicated public
4848 servant, Ralph Gauer will be deeply missed, but the patriotism,
4949 integrity, and dedication to duty that defined his life will
5050 forever inspire all those who had the good fortune to know him; now,
5151 therefore, be it
5252 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
5353 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
5454 of Ralph C. Gauer Sr. and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members
5555 of his family and to his many friends; and, be it further
5656 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5757 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5858 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Colonel
5959 Ralph C. Gauer Sr.
