55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens
66 across the state in mourning the loss of Orland Harold "Ike"
77 Harris, an esteemed statesman, who died July 7, 2021; and
88 WHEREAS, Born on June 5, 1932, Ike Harris became a highly
99 respected public servant whose trailblazing leadership helped
1010 shape the course of modern politics in the Lone Star State; he
1111 will long be remembered for his many accomplishments and his
1212 legacy of dedicated service; and
1313 WHEREAS, Ike earned a political science degree from the
1414 University of North Texas in 1954; he began his career of service
1515 as a member of the United States Air Force, and he distinguished
1616 himself as an instructor pilot and was discharged in 1957 with
1717 the rank of captain; he went on to earn a degree from Southern
1818 Methodist University's Dedman School of Law in 1960, and he was
1919 admitted to the bar that same year; he was later admitted to
2020 practice law before the United States Supreme Court; and
2121 WHEREAS, In November of 1962, Ike Harris was one of the
2222 first Republicans to be elected as a state representative from
2323 Dallas County, and five years later, he became one of only two
2424 Republicans then serving in the Texas State Senate; and
2525 WHEREAS, During his 27-year career as a senator, Ike was
2626 known for his willingness to cross party lines to advance
2727 policies that he believed benefited all Texans; he served as
2828 chairman of numerous committees and provided skilled leadership
2929 in such areas as the implementation of interstate banking and
3030 insurance reform, and he made history as the first Republican to
3131 be dean of the Senate; he helped carve a path for conservative
3232 leadership in Texas by serving as an advisor to William P.
3333 Clements during the 1978 gubernatorial race, which resulted in
3434 the first elected Republican Texas governor in 104 years; and
3535 WHEREAS, Ike Harris was the proud father of two daughters,
3636 Wynn and Gillian, and the proud grandfather of Colby, William,
3737 Cash, and Hayden; he found great joy in cooking for his many
3838 friends and loved ones, and he cherished time spent with family
3939 on the Texas Gulf Coast beaches, especially those in Port
4040 Aransas; and
4141 WHEREAS, Noted for his sharp mind, his amicable spirit, and
4242 his engaging sense of humor, Ike Harris was beloved by many, and
4343 he leaves behind memories that will long be treasured by all who
4444 were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
4646 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
4747 condolences to the bereaved family of Orland Harold Harris; and,
4848 be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5050 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5151 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5252 memory of Ike Harris.
