5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens
6	6	across the state in mourning the loss of Orland Harold "Ike"
7	7	Harris, an esteemed statesman, who died July 7, 2021; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born on June 5, 1932, Ike Harris became a highly
9	9	respected public servant whose trailblazing leadership helped
10	10	shape the course of modern politics in the Lone Star State; he
11	11	will long be remembered for his many accomplishments and his
12	12	legacy of dedicated service; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Ike earned a political science degree from the
14	14	University of North Texas in 1954; he began his career of service
15	15	as a member of the United States Air Force, and he distinguished
16	16	himself as an instructor pilot and was discharged in 1957 with
17	17	the rank of captain; he went on to earn a degree from Southern
18	18	Methodist University's Dedman School of Law in 1960, and he was
19	19	admitted to the bar that same year; he was later admitted to
20	20	practice law before the United States Supreme Court; and
21	21	WHEREAS, In November of 1962, Ike Harris was one of the
22	22	first Republicans to be elected as a state representative from
23	23	Dallas County, and five years later, he became one of only two
24	24	Republicans then serving in the Texas State Senate; and
25	25	WHEREAS, During his 27-year career as a senator, Ike was
26	26	known for his willingness to cross party lines to advance
27	27	policies that he believed benefited all Texans; he served as
28	28	chairman of numerous committees and provided skilled leadership
29	29	in such areas as the implementation of interstate banking and
30	30	insurance reform, and he made history as the first Republican to
31	31	be dean of the Senate; he helped carve a path for conservative
32	32	leadership in Texas by serving as an advisor to William P.
33	33	Clements during the 1978 gubernatorial race, which resulted in
34	34	the first elected Republican Texas governor in 104 years; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Ike Harris was the proud father of two daughters,
36	36	Wynn and Gillian, and the proud grandfather of Colby, William,
37	37	Cash, and Hayden; he found great joy in cooking for his many
38	38	friends and loved ones, and he cherished time spent with family
39	39	on the Texas Gulf Coast beaches, especially those in Port
40	40	Aransas; and
41	41	WHEREAS, Noted for his sharp mind, his amicable spirit, and
42	42	his engaging sense of humor, Ike Harris was beloved by many, and
43	43	he leaves behind memories that will long be treasured by all who
44	44	were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
46	46	Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
47	47	condolences to the bereaved family of Orland Harold Harris; and,
48	48	be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
50	50	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
51	51	Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
52	52	memory of Ike Harris.
