55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Judith Mary Pickle Lancaster, who died
77 March 17, 2021, at the age of 102; and
88 WHEREAS, Judith Lancaster was born on March 6, 1919; she
99 grew up in Big Spring, where she was named Most Popular Girl in
1010 her 1936 graduating class at Big Spring High School; she went on
1111 to earn a degree from The University of Texas at Austin; and
1212 WHEREAS, After her graduation, she worked on the war effort
1313 in West Texas, and she married Jonathan Lancaster in 1943; their
1414 children, Diantha Alspaugh, Meredith Lancaster, and David
1515 Lancaster, were a source of much pride and joy for her, and she
1616 was blessed with seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren,
1717 and a great-great-grandchild; and
1818 WHEREAS, Once Judith's children reached school age, she
1919 began a fulfilling, 30-year career as a teacher; after her
2020 retirement in 1982, she and Jonathan moved to Austin and were
2121 active in a wide range of area organizations, including Meals On
2222 Wheels, the First United Methodist Church, and the LAMP program
2323 at The University of Texas at Austin; a lifelong progressive
2424 Democrat, Judith was extremely gratified at the election of the
2525 nation's first African American president; and
2626 WHEREAS, A woman of courage, grace, and generosity, she
2727 gave unselfishly to others, and she will long be remembered for
2828 her loving spirit and her enthusiasm for living each day to the
2929 fullest; and
3030 WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother,
3131 and she leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by
3232 her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3434 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
3535 condolences to the bereaved family of Judith Mary Pickle
3636 Lancaster; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3838 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3939 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4040 memory of Judith Lancaster.
