55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Dr. Stanley McKenzie, who died July 21,
77 2021, at the age of 76; and
88 WHEREAS, Born October 6, 1944, Stan McKenzie was a revered
99 citizen who led a rewarding life as a devoted Christian and an
1010 Episcopal supervisor of missions; he was also a professional
1111 basketball player and a successful businessman; and
1212 WHEREAS, Stan McKenzie graduated from New York University,
1313 where he was a star basketball player, and he was drafted into the
1414 National Basketball Association in 1966; he played guard for the
1515 Baltimore Bullets, the Phoenix Suns, the Portland Trailblazers,
1616 and the Houston Rockets; and
1717 WHEREAS, After his professional basketball career,
1818 Dr. McKenzie served in business management positions
1919 specializing in human resources and personnel services, and he
2020 oversaw operations and budgets for several successful
2121 corporations; and
2222 WHEREAS, He followed a new calling in 2000, when he became
2323 the first male supervisor of the Missions and Children's Work of
2424 the Women's Missionary Society in the African Methodist
2525 Episcopal Church; as a supervisor of missions, he guided
2626 beneficial programs and projects in the 18th, 13th, and 10th
2727 Episcopal Districts, which brought life-saving services to
2828 several African countries and resulted in thriving youth
2929 programs and community initiatives in Texas, Tennessee, and
3030 Kentucky; he was also proud to have established a scholarship
3131 program for students attending Paul Quinn College; and
3232 WHEREAS, This esteemed religious leader shared a life of
3333 faithful Christian service with Bishop Vashti McKenzie, his
3434 devoted wife of more than 40 years; they were blessed with three
3535 children, and their two grandchildren brought him great pride and
3636 joy; and
3737 WHEREAS, Stan McKenzie was an active member of several
3838 civic and professional organizations and a longtime member of the
3939 Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; his many accolades include his
4040 induction into the New York University Hall of Fame and a
4141 lifetime achievement award; and
4242 WHEREAS, A man of wisdom and generosity, Stan McKenzie was
4343 an exceptional missionary who helped countless people to survive
4444 their individual struggles; he was beloved by many, and he will
4545 long be remembered with deep respect and admiration by all who
4646 were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
4747 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
4848 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
4949 condolences to the bereaved family of Dr. Stanley McKenzie; and,
5050 be it further
5151 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5252 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5353 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5454 memory of Stan McKenzie.
