| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize James Leman, whose curiosity and interest in history |

| 4 | 4 | | and firearms played a role in the legislature's designation of |

| 5 | 5 | | the 1847 Colt Walker pistol as the official handgun of the State |

| 6 | 6 | | of Texas; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, James Leman is the 15-year-old son of State |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Representative Ben Leman; an avid hunter and competitive |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | shooter, James has long been interested in studying the history |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | of such firearms as muzzle-loaders and flintlocks; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his studies, he noticed that |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Texas did not have an official state handgun; he also discovered |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | that the 1847 Colt Walker pistol was one of the country's |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | earliest handguns to hold six rounds of ammunition and that it |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | played an important role in Texas history, especially the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Mexican-American War; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, James's research inspired his father to propose |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | legislation to establish the 1847 Colt Walker pistol as the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | official handgun of Texas, and a resolution declaring this |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | designation was passed by the legislature and signed by Governor |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Greg Abbott; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend James Leman on |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | his avid interest in Texas history and his role in the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | designation of the 1847 Colt Walker pistol as the official |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | handgun of the State of Texas and extend to him best wishes for |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | continued success; and, be it further |
