44 Opal Johnson Smith
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Opal Johnson Smith, who died December
77 27, 2020, at the age of 86; and
88 WHEREAS, Born August 27, 1934, Opal Johnson was an esteemed
99 member of the Dallas community and a native of Nigton, Texas; she
1010 graduated from high school at the young age of 15 and earned a
1111 bachelor's degree in mathematics from Prairie View A&M
1212 University before her 20th birthday; and
1313 WHEREAS, Opal was an active member of the Dallas Prairie
1414 View A&M University Alumni Chapter, and over the years, her
1515 fund-raising prowess contributed greatly to the growth and
1616 success of the university; she established the highly successful
1717 Annual Athletic Scholarship Gala, and her work as co-chair for
1818 the university's Capital Campaign led to more than $34 million in
1919 funding; she was honored for her service and contributions to her
2020 alma mater and the Prairie View A&M University Foundation in 2006
2121 with the dedication of the Opal Johnson Smith Auditorium, and in
2222 2003, she was inducted into the National Black College Hall of
2323 Fame; and
2424 WHEREAS, A highly respected educational leader, Opal
2525 earned a master's degree from the University of
2626 Wisconsin-Madison and enjoyed a 35-year career in the Texas
2727 public education system; she amassed numerous awards for her
2828 outstanding service as a teacher and an administrator, and she
2929 retired as the director of alternative certification for the
3030 Dallas Independent School District; and
3131 WHEREAS, Through all things, Opal enjoyed the love and
3232 support of her husband of 62 years, Joe Edward Smith, a fellow
3333 Prairie View alumnus who shared her enthusiastic commitment to
3434 supporting and promoting education; they were blessed with four
3535 children, who they guided by loving spiritual example, and their
3636 eight grandchildren were a source of great pride and joy for her;
3737 and
3838 WHEREAS, Opal Smith was a woman of great wisdom, kindness,
3939 and generosity and was beloved by many, and her proud legacy of
4040 service will continue to have an impact on the lives of Texas
4141 citizens for years to come; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
4343 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
4444 condolences to the bereaved family of Opal Johnson Smith; and, be
4545 it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4747 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4848 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4949 memory of Opal Smith.
