44 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
55 AN ACT
66 relating to acceptable forms of identification for voting.
77 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
88 SECTION 1. Section 63.0101(a), Election Code, is amended to
99 read as follows:
1010 (a) The following documentation is an acceptable form of
1111 photo identification under this chapter:
1212 (1) a driver's license, election identification
1313 certificate, or personal identification card issued to the voter
1414 [person] by the Department of Public Safety that has not expired or
1515 that expired no earlier than four years before the date of
1616 presentation;
1717 (2) a United States military identification card that
1818 contains the voter's [person's] photograph that has not expired or
1919 that expired no earlier than four years before the date of
2020 presentation;
2121 (3) a United States citizenship certificate issued to
2222 the voter [person] that contains the voter's [person's] photograph;
2323 (4) a United States passport book or card issued to the
2424 voter [person] that has not expired or that expired no earlier than
2525 four years before the date of presentation; [or]
2626 (5) a license to carry a handgun issued to the voter
2727 [person] by the Department of Public Safety that has not expired or
2828 that expired no earlier than four years before the date of
2929 presentation;
3030 (6) an official Native American identification card or
3131 tribal document that:
3232 (A) contains the voter's photograph and address;
3333 and
3434 (B) is issued by a tribal organization or by a
3535 tribe that is federally recognized and located in this state;
3636 (7) an identification card issued by a public or
3737 private institution of higher education located in this state that
3838 contains the voter's photograph; or
3939 (8) an identification card issued by a state agency of
4040 this state that contains the voter's photograph.
4141 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
4242 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
4343 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
4444 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4545 Act takes effect on the 91st day after the last day of the
4646 legislative session.
