44 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
55 AN ACT
66 relating to excused absences from public school for certain
77 students to visit a professional's workplace for a career
88 investigation day.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 25.087, Education Code, is amended by
1111 adding Subsection (b-8) and amending Subsection (d) to read as
1212 follows:
1313 (b-8) A school district may excuse a student from attending
1414 school for a career investigation day to visit a professional at the
1515 professional's workplace during the student's junior and senior
1616 years of high school for the purpose of determining the student's
1717 interest in pursuing a career in the professional's field, provided
1818 that:
1919 (1) the district may not excuse for this purpose more
2020 than two days during the student's junior year and two days during
2121 the student's senior year; and
2222 (2) the district adopts:
2323 (A) a policy to determine when an absence may be
2424 excused for this purpose; and
2525 (B) a procedure to verify that the student's
2626 visit at the professional's workplace did occur.
2727 (d) A student whose absence is excused under Subsection (b),
2828 (b-1), (b-2), (b-4), (b-5), (b-8), or (c) may not be penalized for
2929 that absence and shall be counted as if the student attended school
3030 for purposes of calculating the average daily attendance of
3131 students in the school district. A student whose absence is excused
3232 under Subsection (b), (b-1), (b-2), (b-4), (b-5), (b-8), or (c)
3333 shall be allowed a reasonable time to make up school work missed on
3434 those days. If the student satisfactorily completes the school
3535 work, the day of absence shall be counted as a day of compulsory
3636 attendance.
3737 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2021-2022
3838 school year.
3939 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
4040 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
4141 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
4242 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4343 Act takes effect January 1, 2022.
