| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |

| 6 | 7 | | passing of Shirley Smith Shoquist of Rockwall on June 28, 2021, at |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Maurice D. Smith and Alpha Amanda |

| 9 | 10 | | Torres Smith, the former Shirley Smith was born on October 1, 1936, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and she grew up with the companionship |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | of three siblings, Dale, Barbara, and Carol; in 1954, she graduated |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | from John Harris High School and later earned her bachelor's degree |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | in English and public speaking from Denison University; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Shoquist enjoyed a distinguished 20-year |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | career at Rockwall High School, where she taught English and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | founded a speech and drama department; she was also a successful |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | speech and debate coach and coordinator for University |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Interscholastic League competitions; in 1994, she was acknowledged |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | for her excellence by Who's Who Among America's Teachers; she |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | retired from Rockwall High in 1996 and continued teaching at |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Richland College; in addition, she volunteered with the Pregnancy |

| 22 | 23 | | Resource Center, and she was a member of the Retired Teachers |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | Association, Reviews Book Club, the Rockwall Literary Club, |

| 24 | 25 | | Rockwall Supper Club, and Aspasians; a woman of deep faith, she was |

| 25 | 26 | | active at First Baptist Church of Heath and, later, at Lakepointe |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Church, and she hosted a weekly Bible study; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, In all of her endeavors, Mrs. Shoquist enjoyed the |

| 28 | 29 | | love and support of her husband, Bruce Shoquist, with whom she |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | shared a fulfilling marriage of 62 years; she took great pride in |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | her four children, Sheri, Steve, Stacy, and Shannon, and with the |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | passing years, she had the pleasure of seeing her family grow to |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | include eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and |

| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Deeply dedicated to her family, her faith, and her |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | community, Shirley Shoquist earned the lasting respect and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | admiration of all who were privileged to know her; now, therefore, |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |

| 39 | 40 | | of Shirley Smith Shoquist and extend sincere condolences to her |

| 40 | 41 | | loved ones; and, be it further |
