| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Los Barrios de Amarillo is celebrating its 50th |

| 6 | 7 | | anniversary in 2021, and this is a fitting opportunity to pay |

| 7 | 8 | | tribute to the vital work of this exemplary nonprofit; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In 1971, Los Barrios de Amarillo was established by |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | a small group of community leaders and area volunteers to address |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | the high school dropout rate; today, under the auspices of the |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Amarillo Wesley Community Center, the organization seeks to promote |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | higher education opportunities, leadership training, career |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | awareness, and professional development for students across the |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Texas Panhandle; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The centerpiece of the organization's mission is its |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | scholarship program, which helps students pursue their dreams |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | through education at area institutions of higher learning, |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | including Amarillo College, Clarendon College, Eastern New Mexico |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | University, Frank Phillips College, Texas Tech University, and West |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Texas A&M University; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The organization also hosts speakers at its monthly |

| 22 | 23 | | virtual brunch meetings, and its Step Up to Success career |

| 23 | 24 | | conferences are open to middle school and high school students in |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | the spring and fall, respectively; the Step Up 2.0 program is open |

| 25 | 26 | | to high school juniors and seniors in Potter and Randall Counties, |

| 26 | 27 | | and it offers job-shadowing immersion visits in four areas, |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | engineering, finance and banking, marketing, and aerospace and |

| 28 | 29 | | manufacturing; and |

| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Los Barrios de Amarillo benefits from the capable |

| 30 | 31 | | leadership of its board of directors, including president Mary |

| 31 | 32 | | Bralley, vice president Jennifer Gallardo, treasurer Tina |

| 32 | 33 | | Sisneros, secretary Jerry Branch, and historian Katy Perish; and |

| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Over the past half century, Los Barrios de Amarillo |

| 34 | 35 | | has helped to inspire and empower countless young people, providing |

| 35 | 36 | | them with the tools they need to succeed and prosper; now, |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 50th |

| 39 | 40 | | anniversary of Los Barrios de Amarillo and extend to all those |

| 40 | 41 | | associated with the organization sincere best wishes for continued |

| 41 | 42 | | success in their important work; and, be it further |

| 42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
